Alzheimer’s Association

The Alzheimer’s Association is a nonprofit organization which seeks to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through advancement of research, to enhance care and support for individuals, their families and caregivers, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. There is an immediate need for Community Outreach Volunteers, age 21 and up, to attend local health fairs, sporting events, social events, charity campaigns, and other public venues to provide information about Alzheimer’s disease, our services, and ways to give back. Training and materials are provided. Other volunteer opportunities include: office & clerical assistance including data entry and mailings, helpline specialist, and family support group facilitators. In addition, volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising events such as Memory Walks, Galas, and Charity Golf.   • ·         8:00 am -Noon, Sat., Oct. 15, 2011, Walk to End Alzheimer’s: Friendly, outgoing volunteers, age 15 and up, are needed for a variety of positions before, during and after the event being held at Severn School in Severna Park, MD. Help is needed to greet participants & guide parking, for set-up & take-down, to help with food, beverage, and T-shirt distribution, photograph the event, and more. Students/groups are welcome. Flex Volunteer Projects

FLEX, in partnership with Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G.) is looking for a small group of volunteers to help with the preparation of small shipments of used books such as those provided to members of the armed forces and Peace Corps.  B.I.G., located at 2000 Capital Dr., Annapolis, MD, 21401. This month’s project will be held from Noon–3:00 pm on Friday, August 12, 2011.  A second FLEX project, in partnership with Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails, is also looking for a small group of volunteers to help with park maintenance at Jonas Green Park in Annapolis.  This project will take place from 8:30 – 11:30 am, Saturday, August 20, 2011. H.O.P.E., Inc. (He Opens the Path to Everyone)

H.O.P.E., Inc. is an all-volunteer non-profit Christian ministry serving families in need in the north AA County, Baltimore City areas and also the Appalachian region by collecting and distributing donated school supplies, household goods and furniture, and clothing. H.O.P.E. is currently looking for some assistance with processing (sorting, testing, reconditioning, pricing) yard sale items at the warehouse and to help with warehouse cleanup. We are also seeking church or civic groups to sort donated clothing at their facilities. Pick up and delivery help for donated items is also needed. Grant researcher/writers are also needed to help with fundraising. Donations of furniture, infant and children’s clothing as well as financial donations are needed.   • ·         8 a.m. –12 Noon, Sat., Sept. 17, 2011, Yard Sale: Volunteers are needed to help with a very large yard sale at St. John’s Lutheran Church located at Maple and Hammonds Ferry Rd., Linthicum Heights, MD., on Sept. 17, 2011. Funds raised will fund our programs and budget. Also needed are volunteers to help with set up from 9a.m.–1 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 16 and take down after the yard sale from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. on Sept. 17.  Call 410-859-1297 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

 

Maryland Seafood Festival, Sat.-Sun., Sept. 9-12, 2011

The Maryland Seafood Festival is back this year at Sandy Point Park, September 10–11, 2011. A large number of volunteers are needed to fill various positions throughout the festival as well as the Friday before for setup and the Monday after to help with cleanup. Help is needed at the gate, security, with parking, ticket booths, and more.  Parking is free for volunteers and food vouchers will be provided. Maryland Therapeutic Riding

Located in Crownsville, Maryland Therapeutic Riding (MTR) is a Premier Accredited Therapeutic Riding Center that offers therapeutic horseback riding lessons for children and adults with special needs. Volunteers, ages 14 and up, assist with riding lessons and are needed throughout the week to assist with horse care, barn and facility maintenance. Volunteers are also needed to assist with special events, serve on committees including fund raising, and general office duties.  All volunteers are required to attend a training session prior to beginning their volunteer service.  If you would like to attend an upcoming training session, please call Volunteer Coordinator Katie Spohn at 410-923-1187. On the Farm Benefit Concert: Volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of tasks to include registration, ushers, silent and live auction monitors, cashiers, set up and clean up. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and groups are welcome! Pets on Wheels/Life Enrichment Program/Mom & Me

Volunteers for all these programs visit one-on-one or with their pets or children at homeless shelters, nursing

homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, adult day-care centers or other sites where people lack visits from

family and friends. Volunteers are asked to share at least one hour each week at the facility of your choice. With more than 76 facilities to choose from throughout the county, there are many opportunities to brighten someone’s day close to your home. St. Mary’s Catholic Church English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

St Mary’s ESL Program needs volunteer teachers to teach English one night a week to adult ESL students for the Sept–May. school year.  Our seven levels of classes are held on Tues., Wed., and Thurs. evenings, 7:00-8:45 p.m., at St. Mary’s High School in downtown Annapolis. Teaching experience and Spanish knowledge are helpful but not necessary.  We will be holding an ESL Teacher Training Session on Sat. August 20th from 9:00 to 1:00 for all volunteers at St John Newmann Church on Bestgate Road.  New volunteers are encouraged to attend. STARS – Speakers, Tutors, Achievement, Retention, Success

STARS is an initiative located at the Woodland Job Corps Center in Laurel, Maryland.  STARS works with students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to help with achieving academic goals and the necessary life skills to be a success.  Adult male and female volunteers are needed as mentors and/or tutors to work students between the ages of 16 and 24.  Tutors are needed in math and reading to help them prepare for GED and college entrance tests.  Tutoring is offered on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3:45 to 5:15.  Tutors may work one or both days each week.
