Squirrels Scamper Past Baysox

The Baysox were unable to keep up with the Flying Squirrels Tuesday night as they dropped their third straight game 5-4 on the road Tuesday night. With the loss, the Baysox fall to 67-55 on the season and remain in second place in the Western Division.

Facing Eastern League strikeout leader Eric Surkamp (156), the Baysox got off to a strong start, but failed to maintain their momentum. The team finished with nine hits, but scored just two runs after the first inning and hit 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. During the team’s latest losing streak, they have struggled to come through with timely hitting, something that plagued them early in the season.

The Baysox scored two quick runs in the top of the first inning against Surkamp. Center fielder Xavier Avery hit a lead off single to and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Greg Miclat. Left fielder LJ Hoes drew a walk and then first baseman Joe Mahoney cleared the bases with a double to right field that made the score 2-0.

Richmond took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning against right-handed starting pitcher Oliver Drake. With one out, Francisco Peguero singled to the pitcher and went to third when Johnny Monell singled to right field. Chris Dominguez plated Peguero when he grounded into a force out that eliminated Monell at second. Charlie Culberson followed with a double to right field and Juan Perez cleared the bases with a two-out triple to center field that put the Flying Squirrels ahead 3-2.

Richmond added another run in the bottom of the third inning when Monell hit a lead off home run to right field that made the score 4-2.

Bowie got one run back in the top of the fifth inning when right fielder Buck Britton hit a lead off home run to right field that brought the Baysox back within one at 4-3.

The Flying Squirrels extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. After allowing two runners to reach base with one out, right-handed pitcher Pat Egan replaced Drake on the mound of the Baysox. Egan walked Peguero, the first batter he faced, to load the bases and Monell then plated a run with a sacrifice fly that made the score 5-3.

The Baysox made one last attempt at a rally in the ninth inning against Richmond reliever Heath Hembree. With one out, designated hitter Aaron Baker doubled to right field and scored when Britton singled to right field to make the score 5-4. Shortstop Pedro Florimon then singled to put runners at first and second, but the next two batters were retired in order to end the game.

Drake pitched six and one-third innings and allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out three in his fourth loss of the season with the Baysox. Egan pitched one and two-thirds innings in relief of Drake and did not allow a hit while striking out one batter and walking another.

After leading the Eastern League in wins in the month of July (21), the Baysox have lost three games in a row twice already in the month of August and have lost four out of their last five. The team’s July batting average of.294 has dipped to .252 in August and the pitching staff’s ERA has increased from 3.49 to 4.05.

Wednesday, RHP Bobby Bundy (1-1, 3.86) takes the mound for the Baysox as they look to get back on track against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. His opponent will be LHP Ryan Verdugo (7-5, 4.13).

The Baysox are on the road through Sunday, August 21 for road trip that includes stop in Richmond and Trenton. The team returns home Monday, August 22 for a three-game home stand against Akron.
