O’Malley Senior Center Announces August Events

The O’Malley Senior Activity Center, 1275 Odenton Road, in Odenton has announced a variety of activities during August.

  • Glaucoma screenings will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 9 at the O’Malley Senior Activity Center, 1275 Odenton Road, Odenton, with Jackie Nerette or the Maryland Society for Sight. People who are at high risk for glaucoma need to received a dilated eye exam every one to two years. Individuals at high risk include everyone over age 60 and people with a family history of glaucoma. The screenings are non-invasive and will be on a first come, first served basis.   • A trip to the Holocaust Museum and Union Station in Washington, D.C., will be held on Aug. 11, leaving the O’Malley Senior Activity Center, 1275 Odenton Road, Odenton, at 9:15 a.m. and returning at 4:15 p.m. Grandchildren age 6 and up can attend. The cost is $37, and all will be processed through metal detectors without exception at the museum. At the train station, enjoy the food court, tourist shops, and other sites.   • Elvis is in the building on two days at the O’Malley Senior Activity Center, 1275 Odenton Road, Odenton, in celebration of the King’s birthday. Jed Duvall, an award-winning impersonator, will perform from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 16. In June 2007 he placed third at the Lake George, N.Y., Elvis Festival, the largest competition of its kind in the Eastern United States. The second show features Dan DeVivo at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at the center. He has been impersonating Elvis for five years and is involved in a quartet called the Bosque River Boys. A resident of Stevensville, Texas, he is presenting the concert free. His sister, Jan Chance, is a member of O’Malley Senior Activity Center. For information, call 410-222-6227.
  • The Chesapeake PC Users Group, Inc., will present “Update Your Computer, Learn What They are Made Of” from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 18 at the O’Malley Senior Activity Center, 1275 Odenton Road, Odenton.  A  hands-on experience, the program will show you how to install a power supply, memory, hard drive, optical drive, and a floppy drive. Participants should bring a #1 Phillips head screw driver. You will receive a handout of materials practiced in the class, and a copy of “Smart Computing.” You will keep the computer with an operating system, a keyboard, and a mouse, but no monitor, to take home so you can continue practicing.  The $30 supply fee is payable by check to Chesapeake PC Users Group, Inc.
