Information Sessions For New Elementary School Programs

As part of an ongoing effort to keep parents updated about the new structure of the elementary school Primary Talent Development (PTD) program and Advanced Learner Programs (ALPs), Anne Arundel County Public Schools officials will conduct four information sessions around the county in the weeks after school begins. Parents are invited to attend any of the sessions, which have been scheduled so as not to conflict with Back-To- School nights.

“There has been so much discussion about the new direction of this program, and it is important that parents have an opportunity to have any concerns addressed or questions answered,” said Dr. Maureen McMahon, Assistant Superintendent for Advanced Studies and Programs, the division which oversees the program. “It is one thing to read about the changes, but it is another to see the program in action and then have a chance to discuss it.

We are hoping the timing of these sessions allows parents to begin to experience the true potential of this program and then be in a better position to talk about it.”

PTD is geared toward students in prekindergarten through second grade. ALPs exists for students in grades 3 through 5. Changes to the programs being implemented in the 2011-2012 school year are designed to provide more students in prekindergarten through fifth grade with enriched and advanced instruction more often. The county’s 77 elementary schools and two early education centers will offer all or part of the program, with full implementation at all schools to be completed in three years.

Sessions are scheduled from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. as follows:

● Monday, September 12: Annapolis Middle School, Room 401

● Wednesday, September 14: Meade Middle School, Media Center

● Thursday, September 15: Lindale Middle School, Auditorium

● Monday, September 19: Magothy River Middle School, Cafeteria

Parents can attend any of the four information sessions and are not restricted to the one closest to where their child attends school.
