AACC Brings Home More Honors

Anne Arundel Community College for a second consecutive year was named one of the top colleges in the nation to work for and also, for a second consecutive year, made the Great Colleges “Honor Roll.”

The “Honor Roll” recognition by the Chronicle of Higher Education was awarded to 42 of 111 institutions designated as “2011 Great Colleges to Work For.” Only 12 two-year community colleges and technical schools made the honor roll.

The Great Colleges distinction was based on a random online survey of AACC employees as part of the Chronicle’s “Great Colleges to Work For” recognition program, which salutes colleges with specific best practices and policies. The Chronicle invites all accredited U.S. institutions to participate at no charge and reports results for small, medium and large institutions. AACC fits the large institution category by having more than 9,999 students. In FY 2010, AACC enrolled 53,050 unduplicated credit and noncredit students in 2,852 credit and noncredit courses.

Results released in The Chronicle’s 4th annual report on The Academic Workplace were compiled from surveys of more than 44,000 employees at 310 two- and four-year colleges and universities.

“This is indeed a great honor,” said AACC President Martha A. Smith, Ph.D. “As we begin to celebrate the college’s 50th anniversary we continue to earn national recognition for being an outstanding community college. With our dedicated and talented faculty and staff, we will no doubt keep achieving great things for our students and our community.”

Survey results are based on an institutional audit to capture demographics and workplace policies from each institution and a survey administered to faculty, administrators and professional support staff. The surveys, conducted online by a third party to guarantee anonymity, addressed issues in 12 categories such as collaborative governance, teaching environment, confidence in senior leadership, diversity, respect and appreciation.
