This morning, the Anne Arundel County Police Department said that Robert Leslie Lynch, 57, of Annapolis and Angela Astin, 47, of Chesapeake Beach died in the head-on crash. The police report follows.

On August 18, 2011 at approximately 1753 hours, members of the Traffic Safety Section were requested to respond to the area of Solomon’s Island Road and Solitude Court, Lothian, MD to assist with a fatal motor vehicle crash.

Preliminary investigation reveals that a 2006 Ford F-350 van being operated by Mr. Robert Leslie Lynch was travelling northbound on Solomon’s Island Road. Meanwhile, a 2003 Volkswagen Passat, operated by Ms. Angela Astin was travelling southbound on Solomon’s Island Road. For reasons unknown, the Ford Van crossed the double yellow line of Solomon’s Island Road and travelled into the southbound lane. Subsequently, the Ford Van struck the Volkswagen Passat head on. As a result of the crash, both vehicles left the roadway and the van caught fire. Mr. Lynch and Ms. Astin were both pronounced dead on the scene by responding paramedics from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

Speed is not believed to have been a factor in the crash. It is unknown at the present time if alcohol played a role in the crash. The crash remains under investigation by the Traffic Safety Section.
