Woman Burned After Falling Asleep While Smoking. An Anne Arundel County woman who was using a home oxygen tank suffered serious burns after police said she fell asleep while smoking in bed.Fire crews were called to a home in the 5000 block of Deale-Churchton Road near Shady Side around 5:30 a.m. Thursday.Police said the woman, who hasn’t been identified, suffered second- and third-degree burns on her back and chest. She was flown to a burn center in Washington, D.C., for treatment.The woman’s husband suffered minor burns to his hands and was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis.
Small Plane Crashes In Eastern Shore Creek. A small airplane crashed into a creek in Queen Anne’s County on Thursday afternoon.Queen Anne’s County fire officials told 11 News that the single-engine plane went down shortly after 12:30 p.m. in Broad Creek near the Bay Bridge Airport.Fire officials said the pilot was the only person on the plane, and he appeared to be OK. Authorities said they believe engine failure may be to blame.
Saturday Schools? Baltimore Superintendent Makes Pitch. More city students could go to school on Saturdays if the district’s CEO has his way.Andres Alonso said he plans to at least pitch the idea of an extended school week, according to 11 News education reporter Tim Tooten. Alonso said he believes Saturday classes could help improve student test scores. Reading and math scores on the Maryland School Assessments declined in Baltimore in 2011 from the 2010 figures. About 360,000 students statewide in grades 3-8 took the test this year.Tooten said there is a small group of city schools where students show up for class on weekends.
Hopkins, Lockheed Martin Plan To Eliminate 1700 Jobs. Johns Hopkins Hospital said about 160 clerical associates will lose their jobs as it makes the transition to an electronic medical support system. Meanwhile, defense contractor Lockheed Martin said it plans to eliminate about 1,500 workers from its aeronautics business unit.The Bethesda-based company that makes the F-35 fighter jets said the cuts will fall among higher-paid workers at its main centers in Texas, George and California, as well as six smaller plants in several other states.
