‘Hairspray’ Up Next At Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre

The Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre’s 2011 season continues with “Hairspray”, opening August 4th and running Thursdays-Sundays at 8:30pm through September 4th. “Hairspray” is a Broadway musical-comedy phenomenon that inspired a major motion picture and won eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Set in 1962 Baltimore, the story follows pleasantly plump Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad, who dreams of dancing on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from a social outcast to a sudden star, but she must use her newly-found power to vanquish the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network—all without denting her ‘do!

The show’s creative team – including director Darnell Morris, choreographer Nicole Martin, and music director Trent Goldsmith – return to ASGT after collaborating on the theatre’s production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” in July 2010. For that production, ASGT was recently awarded a Ruby Griffith Award, which recognizes all-around production excellence by amateur theatre groups in the Washington, DC area.

Tickets for “Hairspray” are $18.00 each. A $3.00 discount is available through ASGT’s Eats & Seats program or to groups of 10 or more. To learn more, please visit www.summergarden.com. Tickets are available through the Box Office at 410-268-9212 or online via the website. Connect with ASGT on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AnnapolisSummerGardenTheatre or Twitter at www.twitter.com/ASGTAnnapolis. ASGT is a non-profit, all-volunteer, outdoor summer theatre in the heart of downtown historic Annapolis. New volunteers are always welcome.

Music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman, book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Based on the 1988 John Waters film “Hairspray.”
