Caregiver Workshops Scheduled

| July 07, 2011, 02:07 PM | 0 Comments

To meet the needs of the growing caregiver population, especially Baby Boomers, the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities Family Caregiver Support Program is offering one-day workshops. These will prepare new caregivers to manage the care of their older and/or disabled loved ones. The purpose is to help prevent re-hospitalizations and to reduce caregiver stress.

“Caregiver 101” will provide information needed to prepare for discharge from a hospital or rehabilitation facility, and information on choosing a rehabilitation facility and advocating for quality care there. It will teach caregivers how to manage medication and incontinence, and to support good nutrition and hydration at home. This workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 30, at the Arnold Senior Activity Center, 44 Church Road, Arnold.

“Caregiver 102” will teach caregivers essential home care skills including how to successfully bathe a loved one, protect skin integrity, and complete a safe transfer of the individual using a gait/transfer belt. Participants also can discuss problematic behaviors and receive practical management tips. This workshop will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Arnold Senior Activity Center, 44 Church Road, Arnold.

The workshops are sponsored by Heartlands at Severna Park as well as Seasons Hospice. The Department is grateful for its sponsors but does not endorse any particular vendor or business. The workshops are free and presented by Mary Fridley, registered nurse and founder of Gero-Resources LLC. To register, call 410-222-4464, Ext. 3043, or register online at www.aacounty.org/aging. Anyone needing accommodations can contact Mary Chaput at 410-222-4464, Ext. 3045 or by e-mail at [email protected] at least seven days in advance of the event. TTY users can call via Maryland Relay 7-1-1.
