Bowie Quiets Rock Cats

Baysox pitchers Zach Clark, Chorye Spoone and Brandon Cooney held the New Britain Rock Cats scoreless on two hits Saturday night in New Britain as the Baysox claimed a 1-0 victory. With the win, the Baysox improve to 58-48 on the season and remain 2.0 games behind the Harrisburg Senators in the Western Division.

Bowie scored the only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. First baseman Brandon Waring led off the frame with a double to right field and moved to third on a fly out by catcher Caleb Joseph. Third baseman Buck Britton plated Waring with a line drive single to right field to put the Baysox in front 1-0, before shortstop Pedro Florimon lined out and Britton was caught stealing to end the inning.

On the mound, Clark cruised through five innings of work. Making his first start since August 9, Clark issued a pair of two-out walks in the first inning before inducing a ground out to end the frame. The right-hander retired the side in order in the second and third innings, allowed a lead off single in the bottom of the fourth inning and retired the last six batters he faced before turning the game over to the bullpen.

Pasadena native Spoone relieved Clark to start the bottom of the sixth inning and added three hitless innings of relief. He walked one batter with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning before recording a strikeout to end the inning. Cooney took the hill to open the bottom of the ninth inning and allowed a two-out single, but struck out Chris Parmalee to end the game. Clark earned the win in the contest and improved to 6-7 on the season. Spoone earned his first hold of the season and Cooney recorded his eighth save.

The Baysox recorded eight hits in the game, but leadoff hitter Xavier Avery was held hitless to snap his 15 game hitting streak. He had hit safely in 19 of the last 20 games. Waring and right fielder Ronnie Welty each had a pair of hits in the game.

The Baysox close out the five-game series Sunday afternoon in New Britain. LHP Rick Zagone (4-6, 4.48) takes the mound for Bowie, he is opposed by RHP Deinys Suarez (1-5, 4.86).
