As an outreach service to the community, The Summit School is hosting a free, informational seminar, What is this thing called DYSLEXIA? on Tuesday, July 12th from 9:00am-10:30am on its campus located at 664 East Central Avenue, Edgewater, MD.
Learning difference experts, Dr. Joan Mele-McCarthy and Dr. Jane R. Snider will present a fact-filled discussion on the history, diagnosis and defining differences of dyslexia as well as propose a plan of educational action for school-aged children with dyslexia. The following will be discussed:
- The symptoms and causes of dyslexia;
- When it is appropriate to assess for learning differences;
- What an academic program should include.
Reservations are required no later than Friday, July 8th .
The Summit School is a coed, not for profit school for students in grades 1-8 that offers a highly individualized academic program for bright students with dyslexia and other learning differences.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Dr. Joan Mele-McCarthy, D.A., CCCSLP, Head of School, holds Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science and Doctor of Arts degrees in Speech-Language Pathology from Adelphi University in Garden City, New York. She has been a college professor, clinician, consultant, and diagnostician. In 2006, Dr. Mele-McCarthy earned the coveted Rolland J.Van Hattum Award from the Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation for her significant contribution to the field. She is an expert in the field of learning disabilities as well as speech and language.
Founding executive director, Dr. Jane R. Snider, is an educator with a doctoral degree in Human Development and Education from The George Washington University. She has been a teacher, a college professor, and a Learning Disabilities Specialist. Her expertise led to the creation of The Summit School in 1989. Dr. Snider has earned many awards including most recently the SmartCEO Magazine Women Business Achievement Award, The Washington Post Distinguished Educator Award, Maryland’s Top 100 Women, and the Community Trustee Award.
