Waring Homers Twice, Bowie Still Loses

The Baysox lost to New Hampshire 8-2, despite two home runs by Brandon Waring as they failed to continue a road sweep of the Fisher Cats. With the loss, the Baysox drop below .500 to 30-31 on the season.

For the third time this season, the Baysox entered a game on a four game winning streak, but failed to win and extend the streak to five. The Baysox were again out-hit by the Fisher Cats 13-7 and this time failed to score enough runs to keep up with New Hampshire.

The Baysox struck first in the top of the second inning when third baseman Brandon Waring hit a solo home run to left field with two outs against New Hampshire starter Zach Stewart to make the game 1-0.

New Hampshire took the lead for the first time in the series with two runs against right-handed starting pitcher Zach Clark in the bottom of the third inning. John Tolisano hit a one out triple to center field and scored when Adeiny Hechavarria singled to center field. With Darin Mastroianni batting, Hechavarria stole second and scored on a single to left field by Mastroianni that made the score 2-1.

The Fisher Cats added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Moises Sierra drew a walk and moved to second when Clark was called for a balk while facing Travis d’Arnaud. d’Arnaud struck out swinging, but then Ricardo Nanita singled to second base and moved Sierra to third. With Mark Sobolewski batting, Nanita stole second and both runners scored when Sobolewski singled to left field to make the score 4-1.

New Hampshire extended the lead again in the bottom of the sixth inning when d’Arnaud hit a two out home run to left field that made the score 5-1.

The Baysox got one run back in the top of the seventh inning against Fisher Cats reliever Evan Crawford when Waring hit a lead off home run to left field to make the score 5-2. The home run was Waring’s second of the game and seventh of the season and it was the first time this season a Baysox player has hit multiple home runs in a game.

The Fisher Cats got the run right back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tolisano hit a lead off single to left field but was out at second when Hechavarria grounded into a force out at second. After Mastroianni flied out for the second out of the inning, New Hampshire began another two out rally when Hechavarria stole his second base of the game with Anthony Gose batting. Gose then singled to left field to plate Hechavarria and make the score 6-2.

New Hampshire extended the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against right-handed reliever Armando Gabino. Sierra hit a lead off single to left field and advanced to third on a double to left field by d’Arnaud. Gabino then recorded two outs before Tolisano doubled to right field and drove in two runs in the make the score 8-2.

Clark pitched six and two-thirds innings and allowed six earned runs on 10 hits while striking out six. Gabino made his first appearance of the season with the Baysox and pitched one and one-third innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out three.

Three balks were called in Thursday’s game, making it more difficult for pitchers to get out of innings. Clark was called for a balk in the fourth inning and the runner eventually came around to score. Fisher Cats pitcher Mike Hinckley was called for two balks in the same at bat in the eighth inning, but was able to keep any runs from crossing the plate.

The Baysox recorded seven hits in the game, but only scored runs on two solo home runs by Waring. Other than those two hits, Bowie went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base.

Friday, RHP Chorye Spoone (0-3, 5.12) takes the mound for the Baysox as travel to Portland to play the Sea Dogs. His opponent will be RHP Chris Balcom-Miller (1-1, 2.45).
