City of Annapolis, Disaster Exercise, Thursday, August 11, 1911
The Annapolis Office of Emergency Management is seeking volunteers for a simulated evacuation on the morning of August 11, 2011 in Annapolis. Volunteer assignment involves the role of hurricane evacuees in advance of a storm for exercising evacuation pick up points and bus transportation. Volunteers will be transported a short distance by City buses. Preferred age for participants is age 16 and up, with those under age 18 to be accompanied by a parent. Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services – Back-To-School Program
This program in partnership with the Board of Education matches donors to children from low-income families in local elementary schools by providing backpacks and school supplies. Donors (individuals, groups, and businesses) are sent information on the children and a list of needed supplies for the grade they are entering. School supplies are placed inside backpacks and need to be delivered to elementary schools during August each year. Contact the Volunteer Office at 410-269-4462 for details about donating money, supplies, or otherwise assisting in providing the backpacks to schools. Anne Arundel County Public Library
Library Branches have differing needs for both on-going projects and short-term volunteer activities. Some examples include cleaning and re-casing books, CD and DVD collections, assembly of Story-Time projects, copying, data processing or other computer projects, and file maintenance; ongoing tasks for daily morning shifts include helping with unloading and processing delivery and looking on the shelves for requested items. Volunteer shifts are often flexible and may include some evenings or weekends in addition to day-time hours. Some Branches can work with volunteers as young as 14 and may keep applications on file to call prospective volunteers when needs arise. Training is provided. See www.aacpl.net. Guiding Eyes for the Blind
This nonprofit organization serves the Bay Region by raising puppies as potential future guide dogs. Volunteer puppy raisers are needed to provide the love, support and direction these puppies need to prepare them for formal training. Volunteer raisers (as young as 13 with parental supervision) take puppies into their homes for fourteen to eighteen months and teach them manners and social skills. In addition to daily work and play with their dogs, raisers attend local classes and puppy evaluations. Website: http://www.guidingeyes.org. Citizen Corps Council in Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis
The Citizens Corps Council includes community service organizations, faith based organizations and the private sector which engage in specific projects in working groups. The Council’s mission is to make the County and City safer, stronger and better prepared through service and volunteerism that focuses on all hazards, emergency preparedness, and public safety. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month and the public is invited. § 10 AM–2 PM, Sat., Sept. 10, 2010, 2nd Annual Disaster Preparedness Fair: In celebration of National Preparedness Month, this event organized by Anne Arundel County and CCC will be held at the Glen Burnie Improvement Association lot (where the Glen Burnie Carnival is held). The public is invited to attend, and a wide array of exhibits and information about how citizens may prepare for emergencies will be available. Maryland Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division (Baltimore)
Are you interested in learning about your rights as a consumer? Would you like to help other Maryland consumers resolve their complaints with retail businesses, landlords or health care providers? Volunteers and interns are trained and work 8 – 10 hours per week at the Consumer Protection Division at 200 St. Paul Place, Baltimore, as complaint mediators and to provide information over the Division’s consumer hotline. PKD Foundation, Baltimore Chapter
The mission of the PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) Foundation, Baltimore Chapter is to assist the national efforts to promote research to find a cure for PKD on a regional and local basis. A new Volunteer Chapter Coordinator (age 19 and up) is needed to motivate and lead others in fundraising, lobbying, educating the public, organizing events and helping people affected by PKD. The Chapter Coordinator would ideally have skills in leadership, organization, motivation and fund raising and be available to stay in the job at least two years. Project Linus- Anne Arundel County
The mission of this nonprofit organization is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need, through gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly made by volunteer “blanketeers.” Volunteer “Blanketeers” of all ages are needed to sew, quilt, knit or crochet washable and child friendly new blankets for such children, up to age 18. This is a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups, as well as an opportunity to socialize as you complete these blankets, much like an old-fashioned quilting bee, but with a modern flair. Blankets also can be made at home and dropped off at collection sites which include The Community Center, Capital Vac & Sew, and the Fabric Chest, depending on the time of year. - Third Saturday of every month from 10 am–12 noon: Join other “Blanketeers” at the Community Center in Severna Park working on projects that could use an extra set of hands to complete, such as cutting, matching fabric, sewing, pressing, tying knots, embroidery, or quilting to name a few. Volunteers can be as young as 8, but a parent must accompany if younger than 14.
Sarah’s House
Sarah’s House, at Ft. Meade, is a supportive program that provides case management, childcare, transportation and employment for homeless women, children and men. Volunteer orientations are offered most Friday evenings 7:00pm-8:30pm. Specifically, volunteers are needed to: Prepare breakfast, lunch or dinner for shelter guests; host an evening event for children (ice cream social, movie night, etc.); assist with front desk or clerical duties (urgent need for evening hours); assist the School-Age Summer Program (excellent opportunity for high school students).
