This Week In Volunteering

Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues

This group of twenty-one citizen volunteers promotes positive change for county citizens with disabilities. Members include citizens with disabilities, family members of individuals with disabilities, citizens with an interest in assisting individuals with disabilities, a member of the Anne Arundel County Council and representatives of agencies providing services to individuals with disabilities. The commissioners assess needs; investigate opportunities for improvements in quality of life; support community participation; and advise the County Executive on disability issues. Meetings take place on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 1 –3 pm. Asbury Church Assistance Network (ACAN)

ACAN is a non-profit organization providing food/toiletries, and/or financial assistance toward court-ordered eviction notices or utility cut-off notices in Anne Arundel County. Volunteer Claims Analysts and Intake Personnel are needed who are high school graduates with at least 2 years of customer service experience. Volunteer Inventory Personnel with at least 2 years of high school education are also needed. Candidates must be computer literate and have excellent communication and customer service skills. Hours are flexible, 10a.m.–2:00p.m., Mon.–Wed., but extension of hours is possible. Training is available. For more information, contact [email protected] or 410-647-7667.

Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G) Project

Thousands of books gather dust in storage rooms and attics, while thousands of students and adults in developing countries lack both textbooks and recreational reading. Volunteers drop off good used books and/or help sort 8:00 am–12:00 noon on the second and fourth Saturdays each month (volunteers should call to verify) at the B.I.G. warehouse at 2000 Capital Dr., Annapolis. Individuals of high school age, and older, are welcome to help on a “drop-in” basis. Select volunteers are welcomed Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to sort and shelve books for future Book Sales. Please contact Joyce at 703-919-0069 if you are interested in helping get books ready for a B.I.G. Sale. There is also a book drop off at this location open 24 hrs. daily; directions are listed on the website, below. Special times may be arranged for groups.   • 9:00 a.m.–Noon, Thurs., Jun. 30, 2011, Flex Volunteer Event: The Volunteer Center in collaboration with Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G.) is introducing its first Flex Volunteer event at B.I.G.  We are looking for a small group of volunteers to help with the preparation of small shipments of used books such as those provided to members of the armed forces and Peace Corps.  For more information and to sign up, contact: 410-897-9207 or [email protected].   • 8am–2pm, Jul. 23, Sept. 10, 2011, Book Sales: Book Sales: Select volunteers, especially those with librarian skills are welcomed Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to sort and shelve books for future Book Sales. Eastport-A-Rockin’ 2011, 11 am–8 pm, Sat. June 25, 2011

A variety of volunteer opportunities are available for this annual fundraiser held around and benefitting the Annapolis Maritime Museum as well as Annapolis Musicians Fund for Musicians. The event features 3 stages with 27 bands, lots of good food, and drink and many activities for children & families. Heartland Hospice Services

Heartland Hospice provides hospice care to patients with limited life expectancy as well as support to their caregivers. Volunteers, age 18 and up with a drivers license, are needed as Friendly Visitors to visit patients in their home or nursing home, as Vigil Volunteers to sit with patients without immediate family who are nearing death, as Bereavement Volunteers to call on families of those recently deceased. Clerical and Special Project Volunteers are also needed to help with mailings, office projects, and to create special gifts for patients. H.O.P.E.

H.O.P.E., Inc. is an all-volunteer non-profit Christian ministry serving families in need in the AA County, Baltimore City areas and also the Appalachian region by collecting and distributing donated school supplies, household goods and furniture, and clothing. The following volunteers are especially needed at this time:

  • · Volunteers for pickups and deliveries: Mon­.­–Wed., 8:30 am–12 noon, & Sat. 8 am–12 noon. High school seniors or college young adults, 18 years of age, are especially welcome.
  • · Publicity and Fundraising: Volunteers with the ability to assist us with getting the word out to civic organizations, groups, and neighborhoods or assisting in fundraising are also needed.

Opportunity Builders, Inc.

This nonprofit provides vocational training and employment services to adults with developmental disabilities. Volunteer Instructor Aides, minimum age 18, assist clients with staying on-task to meet production quotas and help them to learn appropriate work skills and techniques. Volunteers who can commit to coming to the Millersville facility, once a week for at least 3 months are preferred. Volunteers, individuals and groups, also conduct job interviews, teach computer classes, assist with special events, painting and maintenance projects, serve on an OBI committee and more. Providence Center

Providence Center is a nonprofit that provides employment, vocational training, recreational, retirement, medical day care, and transportation services to developmentally disabled adults.  There are immediate openings for volunteers, including mature high school students, in: 1) Arnold as Pottery & Horticultural Assistants, Activity Center & Baldwin Industries Woodworking Aides, and Friendly Visitors; 2) Millersville as Activity Center & Arts Class Aides, Crafts, Woodshop, & Pottery Assistants; and 3) Pasadena as Senior Program Assistant. Watershed Stewards Academy, Fall 2011

The Watershed Stewards Academy trains and supports community leaders to serve as Master Watershed Stewards in the protection, restoration and conservation of our watersheds, working to reduce the negative impacts of storm water runoff in Anne Arundel County. If you live in Anne Arundel County, you can make a difference in the health of our waterways. Watershed Stewards Academy is recruiting for the next class of Master Watershed Stewards starting in fall 2011. Applications are due by September 12, 2011.
