Riva Road Bridge Closed

| June 19, 2011, 09:17 PM | 0 Comments

UPDATE 01:11pm 06/20/2011: From the Department of Public Works, this was not a sinkhole, but a large water main break. To affect the repair, a large hole was excavated which could have appeared as a sinkhole. A statement was issued by DPW late last night with this information and unfortunately we missed it and regret the error and delay in reporting..

UPDATE 07:49am 06/20/2011: The Edgewater-Davidsonville Patch is reporting that the bridge is now re-open and repairs were completed overnight.

UPDATE 10:31 pm 06/19/2011: WNAV is reporting that police are now saying bridge may be open tomorrow morning.

Due to a water main break, a large sinkhole has formed on the Annapolis side of the Riva Road bridge over the South River. The bridge is currently closed in both directions.

An employee of the Public Works Department who is not authorized to comment did not think that the commute tomorrow (June 20, 2011) would be impacted, but she stressed that she does not have any reports from the scene.

However, a reader spoke with a police officer on the scene who felt it would be a multi-day closure.

We have sent an e-mail to the public information officer for public works and will update this as soon as we have an official statement.

Please allow extra time if you commute over this route as traffic in Edgewater and the Route 2 corridor will be extra heavy.

Traffic Workaround

The alternate route if you must cross the bridge will be:

From the Annapolis side, take Admiral Cochrane Drive to Route 2 South. Follow Route 2 to Route 214 West. Route 214 West to Beards Point Road. Beards Point Road to Riva Road.

From the Riva side, Riva Road to Beards Point Road. Beards Point Road to Route 214 East. Route 214 East to Route 2 North. Route 2 North to Admiral Cochrane Drive. Admiral Cochrane Drive to Riva Road.
