Giant Food Awards Nearly $2M To Local Schools

Giant Food of Landover, Md. is presenting nearly $2 million to local schools in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Delaware as a result of its 2010-2011 A+ School Rewards program. A+ School Rewards provides a simple way for schools to earn funds to support school programs and enrichment activities every time a customer makes a purchase using their Giant card in their neighborhood Giant Food. Throughout Maryland 1,328 schools will receive more than $1.2 million.

“Since 1989, Giant has awarded more than $83 million to schools across the Mid-Atlantic region through A+. We’re very proud to support more than 2,200 local schools and give back to the communities we’re so privileged to serve,” said Jamie Miller, public and community relations manager for Giant Food of Landover, Md. “This year, as we celebrate and reflect on our 75th anniversary, A+ School Rewards stands out as a program we’re very proud of. Supporting education and our community are cornerstones of our company’s history. Together with our customers, Giant is making a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of students in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Delaware.”

The A+ School Rewards program is linked to shoppers’ Giant Food cards, earning points for in-store purchases. Giant customers can designate up to three schools to benefit from their purchases. Since 1989, A+ School Rewards has raised more than $83 million to help both public and private schools in the Mid-Atlantic region fulfill their academic and enrichment needs. In the past, funds raised by A+ School Rewards have helped purchase new computers, additional classroom technology, musical instruments, and athletic uniforms and funded school aids, field trips, sports and after-school programs.

“We are truly delighted to have had such incredible support from our community and want to thank every Giant shopper who signed up to support Mater Dei through the A+ School Rewards program. We feel blessed to be the recipient of these funds and honored to be the number one school four years running,” said Edward Williams, headmaster of Mater Dei School. “Thanks to Giant’s A+ School Rewards, incredible upgrades to our technology will be made for next year including adding assorted projectors and document cameras. Thanks to Giant, we will be able to enhance the way we teach and make a positive difference in the lives of our students.” Mater Dei School received the largest award in Maryland.
