Disability Commission Seeks Members

County Executive John R. Leopold, a long time advocate for disability issues, announces that he is accepting applications from individuals who are interested in serving as a voting member of the Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues.

“This is an exciting opportunity to become involved in a group that promotes positive change for citizens with disabilities in Anne Arundel County,” says Ginger Palmer, Commission chairman.

Much of the Commission’s work centers on accessibility, transportation, housing, legislation, and children’s issues. Additionally, each year, the Commission holds an event known as DisABILITY Awareness Day (DAD) that highlights vital services, programs and achievements in a festival-like atmosphere. This year’s event will be held Oct. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Westfield Annapolis mall.

The county Commission on Disability Issues is comprised of 21 voting members and 17 ex-officio members, all of whom are appointed by the County Executive.

“As a strong advocate for disability issues, the Commission on Disability Issues plays a vital role in helping develop policy and legislation,” says County Executive John R. Leopold. “I look forward to filling the remaining vacancies on the Commission knowing that these appointments will have the opportunity to work under the leadership of current chairman Ginger Palmer in recommending change.”

Applicants can be an individual with a disability, have a family member with a disability, serve within the disability community, or have an interest in disability issue. All applicants must live in Anne Arundel County.

“I’m very excited and encouraged by the work of this Commission,” says Ms. Palmer. “It’s important that we have a full slate of members so that we can continue to uniformly identify and elevate issues that affect persons with disability to County Executive Leopold and all the elected officials within the county.”

Commission meetings are open to the public and are held the fourth Tuesday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Chesapeake Room, 2664 Riva Road, Annapolis, within the Heritage Office Complex. Individuals needing accommodations should contact Pam Jordan, ADA Coordinator, at least seven business days in advance.

Anyone who wishes to be considered for the Commission should submit a letter to the County Executive and resume addressed to Pam Jordan, ADA Coordinator, 2666 Riva Road, Fourth Floor, Annapolis, MD 21401 by July 8, 2011. For information, contact Ms. Jordan at 410-222-4383.  TTY users should call via Maryland Relay 7-1-1.
