City Parks & Recreation Sponsor Ranger Rick’s Geocaching Adventure

| June 06, 2011, 02:38 PM | 0 Comments

Truxtun Park is now home to a Geocache Ranger Rick outdoor activity for families. Geocaching is a growing phenomenon that combines a real-life, outdoor treasure hunt with GPS-enabled technology. This Ranger Rick wildlife-themed adventure is the first to be implemented in the city of Annapolis. It is free and geared for kids ages 6-14 and their families. Ranger Rick is a popular children’s magazine published by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF).

“Ranger Rick’s Geocache Trails is our way of combining ‘screen time with green time’ in a fun, interactive way that encourages learning about nature and wildlife,” said Meri-Margaret Deoudes, Vice President of Corporate Relations and Special Events for NWF. “This is the newest addition to NWF’s Be Out There campaign, developed to provide fun, easy outdoor activities for kids and families.”

Families start the adventure by going to www.geocaching.com/rangerricktrails. There they search for the trail within Truxtun Park, download and print the passport game sheet. Each geocache has its own page with information about the location and terrain used to find the treasure and coordinates for inputting into a GPS unit or Smartphone.
