Big Inning Boosts Bowie

The Bowie Baysox scored six runs in the first inning and held on to beat the Portland Sea Dogs 7-3 Friday night.  Five different Baysox batters recorded RBIs in the contest, and four of the Baysox 11 hits were doubles.  With the win the Baysox have won five of their last six games, improving to 31-31, and moving into a tie with Altoona for second place in the Eastern League’s Western Division with Altoona.

Second baseman Buck Britton started the rally with a one out double to center field in the top of the first inning.  Catcher Caleb Joseph drove Britton in with a single to right field and scored when designated hitter Robbie Widlansky followed with a double to right field.  Third baseman Brandon Waring hit a ground ball to third base, but William Vazquez threw the ball away, allowing Widlansky to take third base as Waring moved up to second.  It was the first of five errors in the game for Portland.

With runners on second and third with one out, Mitchellville native L.J. Hoes lifted  a two RBI double to left field before moving to third when right fielder Ronnie Welty grounded out for the second out of the inning.  Shortstop Pedro Florimon plated Hoes with the Baysox third double of the frame and first baseman Billy Rowell capped the scoring with an RBI single to center field.  Center fielder Xavier struck out to end the inning with the Baysox leading 6-0.

Pasadena native Chorye Spoone took the mound for Bowie with a comfortable lead, but he allowed a lead off triple to Jeremy Hazelbaker and an RBI single by Jonathan Hee before recording an out.  After allowing the pair of hits, Spoone would retire nine of the next ten batters, inducing a ground out and a double play to get out of the first inning with the Baysox leading 6-1.

Portland added an unearned run against Spoone in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Jorge Padron led off the frame with a double to center field and moved to third on a passed ball by Joseph.  He scored on a ground out, cutting the Baysox lead to 6-2.

Bowie answered with an unearned run without hitting a ball out of the infield in the top of the sixth inning.  Rowell hit a ground ball to second base, but Oscar Tejeda committed a throwing error and Rowell reached safely.  Avery hit an infield single to third base, advancing Rowell to second base.  Britton hit another ground ball to second base and reached on an infield single, but Tejeda committed another throwing error and Rowell scored on the play.  With runners on first and third and nobody out, Portland brought in Eammon Portice, their third pitcher of the game, who retired the next three batters to end the inning with the Baysox up 7-2.

Portland recorded the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Padron led off with a single to right field and stole second base with Tejeda batting.  Spoone struck out the next two batters before allowing an RBI double to Vazquez.  After the double, Spoone was relieved by right-hander Wynn Pelzer and Hazelbaker struck out to end the inning with Bowie up 7-3.

For Spoone, the winning effort was his longest outing of the season, as he allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out five batters over six and two-thirds innings.  He is now 1-3 with Bowie this season, and Friday marked his season high in strikeouts and tied his season low with one walk.

Pelzer worked one full inning in his first relief appearance since April 11.  He allowed a double and a walk in the bottom of the eighth inning before being relieved by left-hander Pedro Viola with two outs and runners on first and second.  Viola retired all four batters he faced to record his first save since April 23, 2009.

Offensively, Hoes led the way for Bowie, going three-for-five with a double and two RBIs, the only Baysox batter to drive in more than one run in the contest.  It was his third multi-hit game of the season, and his first three-hit game since May 24.  Britton also recorded his third multi-hit game, going two-for-five and Rowell recorded his sixth with a two-for-four effort.

The Baysox began a six game road trip Tuesday, June 7, and return home for a three game home stand, Tuesday, June 14.  The home stand features Tailgate Tuesday and Free Food Tuesday on Tuesday Night, Crofton Night Wednesday and Legends of Wrestling Night featuring an appearance by Jerry “The King” Lawler Thursday night.  For more information on Baysox promotions and theme nights, visit www.baysox.com.
