Anne Arundel County Fire Department Awards Ceremony

On June 7, 2011, Fire Chief John Robert Ray presided over the Anne Arundel County Fire Department’s Annual Awards Ceremony that was held at Michaels’ 8th Ave in Glen Burnie, MD. The event which was sponsored by the Anne Arundel Fire Safety Foundation, Hero’s Pub, and Michael’s 8th Avenue was kicked off by Mr. Rod Daniels, anchor, for WBAL TV (Channel 11) in Baltimore. Mr. Daniels is an honorary Fire Chief in Anne Arundel County Fire Department and served as the Master of Ceremonies for the event. Award recipients were treated to dinner prior to the presentation of awards which began about 7:30 p.m.

Anne Arundel County Fire Department presents awards in two (2) general categories; uniformed members and citizens. Each award submission is reviewed by the Department’s Commendation Review Committee and then submitted to the Fire Chief for final approval.

This year there were a total of eight awards given to civilian and uniformed personal for their acts of bravery, as well as, their outstanding accomplishments. Two civilian awards were given for the rescue of an unconscious man in a smoke filled house in Glen Burnie and the rescue of a child in a Brooklyn Park row house fire.

Similarly, two other civilians were greeted and thanked by the victim that they successfully resuscitated after he collapsed and suffered a near fatal heart attack at a local health/fitness facility in Millersville.

In addition, numerous uniformed employees received awards for the rescue and extrication of a man trapped in a vehicle that left the roadway, plummeted 30’feet and came to rest on its roof atop the active Amtrak railroad tracks in Hanover. Furthermore, one civilian member of the Department was recognized for the design and engineering of the two Fire Boats that are currently in service on the County waterways.

County Executive John R. Leopold and Fire Chief John Robert Ray are proud to honor these citizens and Fire Department members for their life-saving efforts, dedication to duty, and service to their community.
