AACC Grad Up For Award

| June 29, 2011, 01:52 PM | 0 Comments

Recent Anne Arundel Community College graduate Daniel D. Brannon is a finalist for the Pearson Prize for Higher Education, a national, two-tiered award that recognizes students who give back to their community while they are completing their undergraduate degrees.

Brannon, 47, of Annapolis, earned an Associate of Applied Science degree this May in addiction counseling. The child of an alcoholic and a recovering addict himself, he went through some rough times. He has been sober for almost five years and now works at a treatment center. He volunteers with his church to have music and arts outlets for teens and hopes one day to start an arts organization for at-risk teens.

In 2010, more than 10,000 students applied for the honor. The top 20 students are named Pearson Prize National Fellows and receive $10,000 each, paid over two years. The other 50 winners are named Pearson Prize Community Fellows and receive a one-time cash grant of $500. The winners will be announced this summer.

The Pearson Prize, one of several programs from the Pearson Foundation, is administered by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. To be eligible for the award, applicants must attend an accredited two- or four-year institution and have a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
