Anne Arundel County Police released the following report about a woman who was robbed at gunpoint by a man posing as a utility worker. While this type of crime is not new, this one had a different spin in that the suspect had what appeared to be an official identification with his photo. While the report specifically does not name BGE as the utility, the suspect was there to “check on a gas leak.”
If there are fake BGE identification cards being produced, no longer is it enough to use a company ID as proof of identity. BGE has said that they do not send anyone to homes unannounced.
If you are not expecting someone, do not open your door. If they are unexpected and claim to be with the utility company, call the company for verification. If you feel threatened, call 911 immediately.
On May 3, 2011 at approximately 10:20 a.m., officers from Eastern District responded to the 400 block of Bousch Place in Glen Burnie in reference to a citizen robbery.
Upon arrival, officers spoke to the 48-year-old female victim, who advised that the suspect, posing as a utility worker, knocked on her door and indicated that he was checking for a possible gas leak. Once inside, the suspect robbed the homeowner at gunpoint. The suspect indicated to the homeowner that he was familiar with the family and their business. Witnesses reported that the suspect entered into a dark, gray Honda sedan, which was parked on a nearby street. Several officers search the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.
