Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference & Visitor’s Bureau

The mission of the Bureau is to plan, produce and promote programs designed to increase the volume of leisure and business visitors to the area while preserving the community and managing the travel and tourism industry. Volunteers, age 16, and up are needed at the West St. Visitor Center and City Dock Information Booth to provide visitors with knowledgeable, appropriate, and current information to assist them in having the best possible experience. Help is also needed for computer data entry. Annapolis Maritime Museum

The Museum is seeking a full-time volunteer coordinator to serve from Sept. 14, 2011 through Jul. 12, 2012; this is an AmeriCorps position with Volunteer Maryland, a program of the Governor’s office. The position provides a stipend, an education award and some benefits. More information and an application may be downloaded from the web site at www.amaritime.org. The Museum also needs volunteers to expand its innovative environmental education program, conduct tours to the historic Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, restore wooden boats, interpret the Museum’s exhibits to the public, and help with the winter seminar series, the summer concert series, and events like the Annapolis Oyster Roast in March and the Boatyard Beach Bash in September. Anne Arundel County Commission for Women

The Commission for Women is seeking volunteers to help address the issues important to women and families in the county. The Commission serves as a resource and advocacy group and advises officials on issues of significance to women. The Commission consists of 16 members representing a diverse cross section of the community and appointed by the County Executive for a two-year term; appointees are expected to attend monthly meetings ad hoc committees and working group sessions, a one-day annual planning retreat and commission sponsored events. Box of Rain Foundation

This nonprofit was formed to honor the memory of Lee Griffin & his passion for sailing to teach life building skills through maritime experiences for local youth-at-risk, targeting kids 9-14 years old. Volunteer are needed as mentors for the big sailor/little sailor program and as sailing instructors. Donations of funds and safety boats for sailing classes, boats, boating equipment – especially life preservers and gear are also being sought.

Chrysalis House

Chrysalis House, Inc. in Crownsville provides addiction treatment services for women and their children in a residential setting. The organization is seeking volunteers with retail experience to assist in the Butterfly Boutique on the weekends in customer services, inventory, sales, and floor planning.  In addition, volunteers are needed to teach basic word processing, spread sheets, basic resume writing, help with computer maintenance and upgrades, building repairs and grounds maintenance, work in childcare center-after appropriate screening, and to facilitate recreational activities for residents.  Some volunteer positions are flexible; both day and evening times are possible.  Internships for Bachelor and Master Degree programs are often available.  Chrysalis House is also recruiting individuals to serve on its board of directors, a great opportunity to make a difference in helping clients rebuild their lives. The board conducts policymaking and fundraising functions. Civil Air Patrol

The Annapolis Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol offers challenging opportunities for youths 12-18 years old, aerospace education enthusiasts and adults with an interest in search and rescue, homeland security, disaster relief and humanitarian missions. Leadership training, technical education and an opportunity to participate in aviation-related activities are just a few of the exciting benefits of CAP membership. Also, during weekends in the summer our squadron flies over the Chesapeake Bay looking for boats in distress and provides eyes in the skies for the Natural Resources Police and the Coast Guard. CAP Annapolis needs youth and adult volunteers to help us perform our air and ground missions. MedStar Health Emergency Preparedness Exercise, Thurs., June 16, 2011

On Thursday, June 16, MedStar Health will conduct its third annual system emergency preparedness drill, Operation Unity III. The scenario will be multiple tornados up and down the Baltimore/Washington corridor. To effectively test our surge capabilities, we need your help as volunteers who will act as patients from 9 a.m. to noon. “Patients” are asked to arrive at Harbor Hospital, 3001 S. Hanover St., Baltimore, MD 21225 at 8 a.m. to prepare for their roles.  No experience is necessary, and a light breakfast will be provided to participants.  Please contact Meg Miller at 410-350-3478 for more information and to volunteer.

Peace Lutheran Church

Volunteers are needed to teach English to Spanish speaking residents in Glen Burnie.  The program runs from September to April every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Training is provided for anyone that is interested.  No prior experience is necessary just the desire to help. If anyone is interested in donating there time for this wonderful and worthwhile community initiative please call Deacon Gail Wilson, Parish Administrator at (410) 766-3283.  The church is located in 416Wellham Avenue, Glen Burnie, MD 21061.

TEAM DNR

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking interested adults to become TEAM (Teaching Environmental Awareness in Maryland) volunteers. The volunteers’ mission is to educate students about the Chesapeake Bay and other Maryland environmental issues. Volunteers should have an out-going personality and a strong desire to protect the Chesapeake Bay. No prior teaching experience is necessary. Currently, TEAM offers schools-free classroom programs on the following topics: Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Streams, Oyster Reefs, Horseshoe Crabs, and Chesapeake Watermen. YMCA Camp Letts

This Edgewater camp needs volunteers for ongoing upkeep of buildings grounds, trail clearing and general office support at the Retreat Center and Camp office.
