Annapolis Deals With More Flooding. Businesses in the Annapolis dock area were stacking sandbags once again as a precaution against flooding.Flooding happens so often that business owners expect it and try and work around it, reported Kai Reed.”It will come in the door, maybe a couple of feet. We deal with that until the tide rolls back out and then it’s back to selling hot dogs,” said Ryan Lemy, owner of Pitt’s Dock Street Dogs “It’s just a regular occurrence that happens a couple of times a month.”

Northrop Grumman To Gut 200 Jobs. Defense contractor Northrop Grumman said it plans to lay off about 200 employees, mostly in the Baltimore region.Company spokesman Jack Martin Jr. said Friday that most layoffs will be at four Baltimore-area locations: the Electronic Systems division’s Linthicum headquarters and facilities in Annapolis, Sykesville and Elkridge.Locations in Virginia, Connecticut and Florida will also be affected.Martin said about 600 employees were approved for buyouts, mostly in Maryland, but there weren’t enough to avoid layoffs.

MD Approves Birth Control For Deer. Maryland has become the first state to approve the use of birth control for deer.The product, called GonaCon, is injected into a deer after it’s tranquilized with a dart gun, state wildlife officials said. Those officials said it’s not a magic bullet to control the deer population. Instead, its use will be limited because of a lack of manpower and due to the fact that it’s very expensive.The Environmental Protection Agency requires that any deer injected with GonaCon also be tagged.

Fallen MD Officers Honored At National Event. Two Baltimore police officers were among the hundreds of fallen heroes honored in Washington, D.C., this weekend.Officer Tommy Portz died last fall when his car slammed into the back of a Baltimore fire truck. Officer James Fowler was killed weeks earlier in a car crash in Pennsylvania.Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano was the event’s keynote speaker at the National Peace Officers Memorial Day event.”Today, we are a stronger nation. We are a more prepared nation. We are a more resilient nation, and the contributions of law enforcement professionals are a big reason why,” Napolitano said.
