New Senior Directory Available

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has published its 2011-2012 edition of “Services for Seniors, Adults with Disabilities, and Caregivers.” The free directory is printed annually with the cooperation of the Senior Services Provider Group Inc., a non-profit membership organization composed of businesses and individuals who provide services to older adults, caregivers, and families. The directory is released each year during May, which is Older Americans Month.

“We are pleased that this year’s new directory has many updates,” says Dr. Carol Baker, Department director. “The Department has as its mission, ‘Making Life Better,’ and this directory goes a long way toward achieving that mission. We have included many more web addresses which should be helpful, especially to Baby Boomers who are familiar with using the Internet. In addition, we have a new category of services just for veterans.”

Among the new items are eight new pages with information on the Friends of Arundel Seniors, a nonprofit group that installs safety equipment for low-income seniors in their homes; rental housing details for independent seniors and adults with disabilities; how to apply for housing and rental assistance; how to get legal help; how to apply for benefits from the county Department of Social Services; partnership and sponsorship opportunities; and caregiving information.

Additional material is available on disability services and the Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues. The 80-page book includes details on 22 programs at the county’s Department of Aging and Disabilities. The directory has 76 categories of resources available, from Active Adult communities to Voting. The index provides the page number for quickly finding a particular agency providing a needed service.

Production is handled by What’s Up Publishing Group Inc., with net proceeds from advertising sales donated to Friends of Arundel Seniors Inc. for their home safety projects for the elderly. The county Department of Aging and Disabilities does not pay for the publication which is supported by advertising.

Copies of the free directory can be obtained at the department’s headquarters at the Heritage Office Complex, 2666 Riva Road, Fourth Floor, Annapolis, and at the department’s seven senior activity centers, county public libraries, CVS drug stores, Food Lion grocery stores, and Super WaWa’s and other smaller WaWa stores in the county. The directory also is online at www.aacounty.org/aging; click on the title in the right-hand column. For more information, call Maryland Access Point/Information and Assistance at the department at 410-222-4257.
