Harrisburg Hits Around Baysox

Harrisburg got out to an early lead and never allowed the Baysox to get back in the game as they defeated the Baysox 8-3 Saturday night. The loss, Bowie’s second in a row, drops the Baysox below .500 to 24-25.

The eight runs scored on the Baysox Saturday night marked the most against the Baysox since a 10-2 loss at Erie on May 7.

Baysox right-handed starting pitcher Zach Clark struggled against Harrisburg. The Senators struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Derek Norris hit a lead off home run to left field. With one out, Chris Rahl doubled to right field and moved to third on a single to left field by Stephen King. The Senators scored the second run of the inning when Jonathan Tucker grounded into a double play, but Rahl scored before King was thrown out at second.

Harrisburg added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Steve Lombardozzi hit a lead off single to right field and moved to second on a single to center field by Josh Johnson. Bill Rhinehart singled to right field and scored Lombardozzi while moving Johnson to third before advancing to second on the throw home. Tyler Moore drove in another run when he singled to left field and moved Rhinehart to third. Derek Norris drew a walk to load the bases and then Alex Valdez flied into a double play when Rhinehart was thrown out at home. Moore moved to third on the play and scored when Rahl doubled to right field to put the Senators up 5-0.

The Senators put two more runs across in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a commanding lead over Bowie. Moore hit a lead off double to left field and Norris drew a walk before both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Valdez. After a ground out by Rahl, King plated both runners with a single to right field to put Harrisburg up 7-0. Right-handed relief pitcher Raul Rivero replaced Clark and recorded the final out of the inning.

The Baysox avoided the shut out by scoring on Harrisburg relief pitcher Zech Zinicola in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, third baseman Brandon Waring doubled to right field and scored when first baseman Billy Rowell reached on a fielding error by shortstop Josh Johnson to make the game 7-1.

Harrisburg got the run right back in the bottom of the seventh against right-handed reliever Dan Klein. With one out, Norris singled to third base and scored on a double by Rahl to make the score 8-1. For Klein, it was just the second earned run allowed in eight games with the Baysox.

Bowie mounted one final comeback in the top of the ninth inning when they scored two more runs. Rowell drew a one out walk and right fielder Ronnie Welty then hit a two-run home run to left field to make the score 8-3. Center fielder Xavier Avery then singled to center field and moved to second on a single by second baseman Greg Miclat. The game ended when designated hitter Robbie Widlansky grounded into a double play.

Clark had his worst outing of the season, pitching four and two-thirds innings and allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits while striking out three and walking two. Rivero pitched one and one-third innings in relief of Clark and allowed no runs and no hits. Klein pitched the final two innings of the game and allowed one earned run on two hits while striking out three.

Harrisburg right-handed starting pitcher Shairon Martis had a solid outing against the Baysox, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing five hits while striking out five.

Welty broke a 10 game home run drought with his team-leading eighth home run of the season Saturday. After recording two hits in the past six games, Welty came through with three hits and two RBIs.

The Senators recorded 14 hits in the game and converted them into eight runs while the Baysox recorded 11 hits, but converted them into just three runs. As a team, Bowie was 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

With his hit in the top of the ninth inning, Avery extended his team-leading hitting streak to 11 games. Avery had gotten on base to start five consecutive games, but struck out to lead off Saturday’s game against Harrisburg.

Sunday the Baysox play a doubleheader against the Harrisburg Senators. RHP Chorye Spoone (0-1, 3.12) will take the mound for the Baysox against RHP Erik Davis (1-1, 3.55) in the first game and RHP Tim Bascom (2-1, 4.76) will pitch for Bowie in the second game.
