Washington Expresses Interest In Market House

It was only a matter of time until the incessant wrangling and inept management of the Annapolis Market House caught the eye of Washington.  Eye On Annapolis has learned from a Democratic party insider that Mayor Cohen has begun to feel some pressure from within the upper reaches of the Democratic party to get the Market House issue resolved once and for all. Perhaps this pressure explains why the Mayor took to his Twitter feed early Tuesday morning to voice his displeasure with the City Council.

How high in the Democratic party? Well, you can’t get any higher when the White House takes an interest. While President Obama has yet to personally speak with the Mayor to finalize any details, we understand that this process began in August of 2010 when the First Lady, Michelle Obama and her daughter Sasha visited Annapolis and had lunch at the Boatyard Bar & Grill.

After a tour of the State House, the pair (in their motorcade) passed by the derelict Market House and Sahsa commented to her mother that “Annapolis is such a pretty town, it is a shame that this building looks like something we have in the south side of Chicago.”

The School Project

From that casual comment, stemmed a school project for Sasha who attends the prestigious Sidwell Friends School in Washington. Her project, Urban Blight In The Midst Of Beauty earned the 9 year old an 89%. (Scroll to bottom to see Sasha’s actual project.) While discussing grades one evening in the Private Residence, the President took an interest.

President Obama has decided to step in to set the Market House Straight

Emanuel

Without any advance notice, he dispatched trusted adviser Rahm Emanuel (prior to his leaving the administration) to investigate what could be done, if anything. In his report back to the President, the former Chief of Staff was direct and to the point, “Man has the City $%#ed up that property. It used to be a nice place to get some chicken  and a sandwich, but now it is nothing but an almost vacant &^&$hole.” But Obama was not put off despite Emanel’s admonishment, “Look Mr. President, Ellen Moyer, Rob Schuetz, Josh Cohen, Doug Smith, Mike Mallinoff and even Lehr Jackson and his posse couldn’t make this work–are you sure you wanna take this one on?”

Unmoved, the President set the wheels in motion.

While it is unconfirmed at this point, sources have indicated that the White House does not want to set a precedent for other cash strapped municipalities by directly infusing cash into the project. It has been suggested that  the President will slip the keys to the Treasury Department and the code to start the presses to Mayor Cohen one night to enable the funding.

Current White House Press Secretary was unavailable for comment, but his predecessor Robert Gibbs said, “Uhm, yes, the President, err, well uhm.”

Obamacare

We attempted to contact Mayor Cohen for a reaction, but apparently after Monday’s City Council meeting he took his gavel, went home, tweeted  and has not been heard from since. We did catch up with Alderman Fred Paone (Pseudo-R 2nd Ward) to ask if he thought this was a good move. “Absolutely. This is just the kind of push we need… Obamacare at the Market House! That’ll get people downtown,” said Paone.
