The Arc of the Central Chesapeake Region

The Arc advocates for and supports County citizens with developmental disabilities. Adult volunteers are needed to help with fund raising, assist in the office, with special events, and to serve on the Board of Directors. Volunteers, age 16 and up, are also needed for painting and as gardening assistants, and more at The Arc headquarters and at the 30 homes The Arc maintains in the county. Board Development Committee: We are soliciting committee members for a new Board Development Committee. This group will help ensure a strong stream of volunteers, train volunteers and also ensure the board is diverse and properly staffed. Bello Machre

Volunteer your time and talent and be a part of our growing Bello Machre family.  Bello Machre provides loving homes and support to people with developmental disabilities. A wide range of opportunities are available throughout Anne Arundel County.  Orientation training is provided and volunteers 18-years-old and up must pass a criminal background check. Bello Machre does not offer opportunities to fulfill court-ordered community service.  Contact Evette Watson at (443) 702-3064 or [email protected].  See website: www.bellomachre.org. Some current specific volunteer needs include:

  • 9am – 2pm, Mon, April 18, 2011, Spring Fundraising Mailing: Volunteers are needed to help stuff and seal envelopes for the Development Dept.. Snacks will be provided. A volunteer is also needed for approximately 10-15 hours per week working directly with the Volunteer Coordinator. Some of the essential duties include: Data Entry; Volunteer Correspondence; Reference Checks; Volunteer / House Evaluations; and Volunteer Recruitment.

Creating Communities, 2011 Arts Mentorship Academy, 8:00 am–2:00 pm, Jun. 20 – Jun. 24, 2011

Applications are being accepted for youth, age 8-17, for a week-long arts immersion program at Maryland Hall for the Performing Arts; talented young artists will experience art as a “life tool” by creating, collaborating and communicating with other likeminded youth. This program is facilitated and mentored by some of the best artists and teachers in the area.  Admission is 100% scholarship and is based on financial need and school counselor, partner or art/music teacher referral.  Adult volunteers are also needed who love working with talented kids and can commit three or more days from June 20-June 24. Maryland Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division

Are you interested in learning about your rights as a consumer? Would you like to help other Maryland consumers resolve their complaints with retail businesses, landlords or health care providers? Volunteers and interns are trained and work 8 – 10 hours per week at the Consumer Protection Division at 200 St. Paul Place, Baltimore, as complaint mediators and to provide information over the Division’s consumer hotline. Friends of Quiet Waters Park

The non-profit organization supports the operation of the park and the events that take place there. Volunteers, age 15 and up, are needed throughout the year for a variety of tasks to support events such as Earth Day in April, Summer Concert Series from Jun.–Sept., Howl-O-Ween Bark ‘n Bash in late Oct., and the Arts Festival held in the fall each year.   • 10am – 5:30pm, Sat. 4/23/11, Earth Day Celebration and 3rd Annual Family, Music and Kite Festival: Volunteers are needed to help lead children and adult nature-oriented programs and activities; scales and tales; lady bug tracking program; bird walk; rain barrel and composting demonstrations; environmental presentations and exhibits by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the Watershed Stewards Academy.

Revisiting the Plastic Problem”; 6/16/11:  “The Benefits of Eating Green!”; 7/7/11:  “Chesapeake Bay Series Part I”; 7/21/11: “Chesapeake Bay Series Part II”: Volunteers are also needed for a variety of tasks prior to and on the nights of the above Lecture Series held on the first or third Thursdays of the month at 6:30 pm in the Blue Heron Center. Maryland Office of Tourism Development Welcome Center Program

Volunteer at one of Maryland’s Welcome Centers by joining the award winning Ambassador program.  The volunteer staff welcomes visitors and local residents coming to the Welcome Centers for Maryland information. They also offer assistance with directions and transportation options, hotel accommodations, assist visitors with itineraries, greet motor coaches and work with tourism industry and private sector representatives within Maryland.  Each volunteer works at least one 4-hour shift every week at the Welcome Center desk: Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Partners in Care

Partners In Care is an all-volunteer local nonprofit helping older adults remain independent in their homes. Drivers, receptionists, handymen, ride dispatchers, Life Line emergency response installers, and boutique workers–all are needed. No amount of volunteer time is too large or too small! May 14, 2011, British Car Show: City Imports Ltd., 166 Penrod Court, Glen Burnie, MD, is sponsoring a car show open to all pre-1980 British cars at its location to benefit Partners in Care. V-LINC (Formerly Volunteers for Medical Engineering)

Volunteers with expertise in medicine, engineering and technology are needed to develop unique solutions that assist people with disabilities manage their daily life. Volunteers age 21 and up who are active or retired medical/rehabilitation professionals or those with engineering backgrounds are needed to assess disabilities and to design and build one-of-a-kind devices for clients with disabilities. Also needed are volunteers, age 16 and up, in Baltimore to work weekdays in the computer loan center testing, repairing, and refurbishing donated computer equipment. Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County, Help Save the Bay Day

9 a.m. – Noon, Sat., Apr. 30, 2011, Help Save the Bay Day: Volunteers are needed to help to control storm water runoff by learning how to build a rain-garden, weed and plant garden areas, clean up underbrush, trash and other debris from Lake Waterford Park. Volunteers will meet at the pavilion near the parking lot at 830 Pasadena Rd., Pasadena 21122 at 9 am. Volunteer waivers must be signed, either there or in advance. The waiver form can be emailed and must be co-signed by a parent for volunteers under age 18. Watershed Stewards will be on site to discuss problems facing the Magothy River Watershed and to assign tasks. Participants should wear work clothes and closed-toe shoes. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, work gloves, and if available: gardening tools (marked with your name) including rakes, trowels, hoes, etc. (some tools will be provided).  For information, contact: Sarah Litts at [email protected] or call 410-897-9207.
