Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management

The AA County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) coordinates resources and facilitates the response and recovery efforts of local, state, federal and private agencies in emergencies.   • · 10 am–4 pm, Sat., April 16, 2011, Red Cross Shelter Training: The Office of Emergency Management is sponsoring an American Red Cross Shelter Management class to take place on Saturday, Apr. 16.
  • · 8:00 AM– 12 Noon, Fri., June 17, 2011, Emergency Shelter Exercise: The Office of Emergency Management in conjunction with the Anne Arundel Co. Departments of Social Services, Health, and Animal Control will be conducting a shelter exercise at Arundel High School in Gambrills, MD. We need 50-100 volunteers of all ages to participate, including anyone that speaks another language. There will be roles for some to play.

Arundel House of Hope

8am – 4pm, Sat., April 16, 2011, Medical Clinic Demolition: The Arundel House of hope will need 10 volunteers to help with “partial demolition” of the interior of the House of Hope Medical Clinic building at 514 North Crain Highway, Suite C, Glen Burnie, MD 21061, so that construction may begin on the new facility. Specifically we need help tearing down the bathroom and extended ceiling. We are also asking for donations of 10–15 sets of gloves, 10 – 15 pairs of safety glasses, 10–5 hard hats, and 2 bakers scaffold’s. Volunteers should be comfortable with hands-on labor, knocking down walls, climbing ladders, and overall construction assistance. The Caring Collection, Inc.

This nonprofit organization raises funds for cancer research and patient care at Anne Arundel Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital by making and selling stained glass angels and sun catchers. Volunteers help make sun catchers every Mon. Tues and Thurs. in the Annapolis studio.   • 1:00–3:00 pm, Sun., May 1, 2011, Presentation Day: Extra volunteers are needed during the week of April 25 to prepare for the Caring Collection Presentation Day at the residential studio of Bobbie Burnett, 1692 N. Harbor Ct, Annapolis. Volunteers are also needed on Presentation Day to help with the event. Doctors from Johns Hopkins and Anne Arundel Oncology Centers will be in attendance to receive funds from the Caring Collection to purchase medical equipment to benefit oncology patients.  The public is invited. Banneker-Douglass Museum

The Banneker-Douglass Museum is in need for volunteers to expand its volunteer tour guide (docent) and public programming opportunities for the general public. The service from volunteers helps make sure community members gain a deeper understanding of Maryland’s African American heritage and culture. Hope House Treatment Center

April, Alcohol Awareness Month: During the month of April, Hope House will offer free and confidential alcohol screenings. Talk privately with an addiction’s professional and receive information about local resources. Those who may need further evaluation will receive treatment referrals and recommendations. The Metropolitan Washington Ear

This organization provides free multi-media reading services for visually impaired, blind, or physically disabled people who cannot read print. They help to bring visually impaired people into the mainstream, rather than segregating them from society.  Volunteers, age 18 and up, can help out in a variety of ways including reading periodicals into a computer, reading publications for airing on a 24-hour closed circuit radio broadcast, for a speakers bureau for community outreach, and for receiving forwarded calls at home to provide lookup services in Yellow Pages, ads, etc. Volunteers are also needed during office hours for data entry, special projects, or large mailings. Patuxent Wildlife Refuge

10 am–3:00 pm Apr. 16, 2011, Volunteer Workday: On behalf of the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge, the National Wildlife Foundation (NWF) is organizing a volunteer workday at the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge, Laurel, MD (RT. 197) 10901 Scarlet Tanager Ct, Laurel, MD. NWF will be working on a variety of projects from:  removing invasive species, planting a meadow (over 6,000 plants), cleaning up pens to prepare them to house whooping cranes (lots of pulling of weeds), helping with citizen science projects including frog and amphibian surveys, bee study and earthworm plots – just to name a few of the activities.  NWF is looking for 300 volunteer on this day. If you would like to volunteer at Patuxent, you can register at: http://online.nwf.org/site/Calendar?id=105001&view=Detail.

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center-Edgewater, MD
Learn more about the Chesapeake Bay area and share your enthusiasm for nature with others by becoming a volunteer at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Edgewater MD. SERC is looking for volunteers to support its hands-on K-12 and public education programs that center on SERC research and Chesapeake Bay ecology. Volunteer, minimum age 16, opportunities accommodating various interests and schedules include: field trip assistants, canoe guides, story tellers, aquarium maintenance team, flyer distributors, toddler program organizers, fundraisers, and graphic designers.   • 10 am-3 pm, Saturday, May 14th 2011 SERC Open House on the Bay: The public is invited to meet researchers, see displays, and participate in hands-on science. There will be children’s games, face painting, crafts, live entertainment, free boat rides, canoe trips, and hay rides. There will be the 6th Annual Wade-In with the Rhode/West River Keeper at 11:30 am, displays from local heritage and environmental groups, and much more. Spa Creek Conservancy

9AM on April 16, 2011, Amos Garrett Park Project: The Spa Creek Conservancy will be meeting at the Amos Garrett Park in Annapolis.  There we will be maintaining the existing rain garden, planting native shrubs and perennials and doing routine cleanup.  We’d love to have folks come help.  Bring a shovel and your gloves if you have them.
