The Blues Goes Green

Chesapeake Bay Events, Inc. has joined with Anne Arundel County Waste Management Services and Sandy Point State Park to take steps in making the 2011 Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival “green”.  In addition to providing separate recycling bins for paper, glass and plastic, we are also encouraging all of our vendors to recycle whenever possible.  With the cooperation of our attendees and vendors, we will return all oyster shells to the bay through the Oyster Recovery Partnership’s Shell Recovery Program. This program was piloted at last year’s festival.

“We tried a few years ago to implement a recycling program at the event, but it was simply cost prohibitive.  With the support of the Anne Arundel County, we are finally able to take this important step for our festival and the environment,” states Sarah Petska, Event Coordinator.  We know this effort will be well received by our audience.  They have expressed an interest, for years, in taking the festival green.  “I’m sure that recycling will be a success at the Blues Festival because this audience has always been extremely conscientious about helping us keep the park clean” says Petska.

The Chesapeake Bay Events (CBE) held its first festival in 1998.  It has quickly gained national notoriety as one of the premier Blues Festivals in the world.  Outside of providing top caliber entertainment, the festival also gives ALL net proceeds to charity.

This year’s headliners include: Chris Isaak, Little Feat. Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Mayall, Shemekia Copeland and the Manzarek-Rogers Band featuring Ray Manzarek keyboardist for The Doors. In all, fourteen acts will take the stage over the two day festival.

As with every year, all of the net proceeds will go to charities.  This year’s recipients include: Special Olympics of Maryland, John Hopkins Cleft and Cranial Facial Children’s CAMP FACE, We Care and Friends, which is an organization providing a wide variety of services to the needy of Annapolis, and Camp Fantastic, a camp for children with cancer and their siblings which is operated by Special Love, Inc.

Tickets for the festival are still available at the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival’s website.
