The 14th Annual 0.05 K Bridge Run

<–be sure to share this with the runners, marathoners, triathletes, and ironmen competitors who follow you on twitter or are friends on facebook!

The eyes of the world will once again be focused on the Gulf of Eastport (aka: Spa Creek) to bear witness to what has been described as “one of the least demanding outdoor sporting events ever conceived”.  -Runner’s World, Oct. 1993.

Saturday May 7th, Crack O’ Noon…. til it’s over

The MRE’s annual rite of late-Spring, an all-out combination sprint and stroll, will take place across The Spa Creek Bridge that spans both the physical and metaphysical gap between the City of Annapolis and its fractious neighbor, The Maritime Republic of Eastport. Distance: 0.05K (more or less). Runners, walkers, lost tourists and canines are all invited to test their endurance in this not-so-extreme event. Past champions have completed the course in an astonishing 30-some-odd seconds, give or take. Rehydration stations will be staffed by the MRE Hospitality Team on the bridge for those competitors-in-need. Silly costumes are encouraged.

Registration will begin at 11a.m. at Fleet Feet Sports Annapolis, 318 Sixth Street. The race starts at the foot of the Spa Creek Bridge (Annapolis side, next to the Annapolis Yacht Club). *Registration Fee : $20.00 includes a specially designed, limited edition t-shirt (designed by MRE artist and Bridge Run founder, Cindy Fletcher Holden, and donated by The Boatyard Bar and Grill), a course map, and a runner’s number.

After the course has been cleared by a pace car or other suitable vehicle, a single cannon shot will send the racers from the starting line at the foot of the Spa Creek Bridge (Annapolis side, next to the Annapolis Yacht Club), up and across the bridge to the finish line on the Eastport side. *All proceeds benefit the SPCA of Anne Arundel County and METAvivor-an Annapolis metastatic breast cancer support group.

The MRE Revolutionary Council will award priceless trophies (hand-crafted by Cindy Fletcher Holden) to the swiftest and less than swiftest finishers. Prizes will also be awarded to various categories to be created on race day at the whim of race organizers. Immediately upon completion of this world-renowned celebration of racing, participants are encouraged to gather at Davis Pub and Boatyard Bar and Grill (this year’s official post-race rehydration stations) for some post-race carb-loading and rehydration beverage specials.

A word of advice to humans who run or walk with their dogs: Please start at the back of the pack so as not to trip the “serious” competitors in front, and take care to avoid the grated part of the bridge surface to avoid paw injuries.
