Former Governor William Donald Schaefer Dies At 89

William Donald SchaeferFormer Mayor of Baltimore and Former Governor William Donald Schaefer died this evening.

Former aide Lainy LeBow-Sachs said Schaefer died at 6:30 p.m. Monday at his home at the Charlestown retirement community outside Baltimore.

He was 89.

Schaefer was a four-term Baltimore Mayor and a two-term Governor of Maryland and is largely credited with the revitalization of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

Most notable was Governor Schaefer’s lack of political correctness. He always spoke his mind and expressed his opinions without reservation from insisting that a McDonald’s employee “speak English” and for asking a legislative aide to “turn around” so he could have another look at her backside.

Schaefer was a loved icon in Maryland and no matter which side of the political spectrum you reside, this is the end of an era.

The Baltimore Sun has an incredible obituary of the life and career of Governor Schaefer.
