Baysox Unable To Keep Up With Richmond

First baseman Brandon Waring hit the Baysox first home run of the season, but Bowie fell 4-2 to Richmond on the road Monday night.

Right-handed starting pitcher Tim Bascom lasted five innings, but surrendered nine hits, allowing four runs and striking out six, however, for the second night in a row, the Baysox starting pitcher did not issue a walk.

Richmond got off to a quick start scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Bascom struck out leadoff hitter Charlie Culberson, but then surrendered a single to Justin Christian. With Roger Kieschnick batting, Christian stole second, and a double by Kieschnick scored Christian. Joe Koshansky would ground out to second baseman Greg Miclat, but would advance Kieschnick to third. A ground rule double by Juan Perez scored Kieschnick, and then Johnny Monell grounded out to end the inning.

Waring, playing first base tonight after starting three games at third, got one of the runs back when he hit a home run on the first pitch of the second inning from left-handed starting pitcher Ryan Verdugo. Shortstop Pedro Florimon was the only other Bowie hitter to get on base in the inning, when he was hit by a pitch and stole second, but a fly out by right fielder Ronnie Welty would end the inning.

The Flying Squirrels kept up the pressure in the second inning as they started off with a lead off single by Mike McBryde. Jose Flores would then single on a ground ball to Bascom that advanced McBryde to second. Joel Weeks would hit another ground ball to Bascom, who would throw it to third baseman Carlos Rojas to retire the lead runner, but Weeks and Flores arrived safely at first and second. Bascom then struck out Culberson for the second time in the game, but another Christian single pushed Flores across for the third run of the game, while advancing Weeks to second. Bascom would get out of the inning by getting Kieschnick to ground out.

The Baysox kept the game close in the top of the third inning by scoring another run to make the game 3-2. Rojas would draw a lead off walk before center fielder Xavier Avery struck out for the second time in the game. Miclat would ground out to third base, but not before advancing Rojas to second. Left fielder Jeff Fiorentino then hit a single to left field that scored Rojas and Fiorentino advanced to second on the throw home. The inning would end with one run scored for Bowie after Waring struck out.

After a perfect third inning by Bascom, Richmond got on the board again in the fourth inning when Flores hit a home run with one out after McBryde struck out. Bascom would surrender a single to Culberson later in the inning, but would not allow any more runs.

Right-handed reliever Wynn Pelzer replaced Bascom in the sixth inning and threw three perfect innings for the Baysox, striking out one batter and keeping the game in reach for the Bowie offense. However, the Flying Squirrels bullpen, and closer Jason Stoffel prevented the Baysox from making a comeback.

For the second game in a row, Bowie hitters did a better job making contact at the plate instead of striking out, but the Baysox struggled to record hits down the stretch. After strong second and third innings where they got two runs and four runners on base, through the final six innings of the game, they scored no runs and did not have more than one hit in an inning.
