The Bowie Baysox play the first home game of the season at Prince George’s Stadium Thursday, April 14, against the Erie SeaWolves at 7:05 p.m. To celebrate the home opener, the Baysox are giving away magnet schedules, Packing the Park for Pink with Susan G. Komen for the Cure and welcoming several special groups.
Baysox Director of Marketing Brandan Kaiser is impressed by the Opening Day lineup. “Opening night is always the most exciting day of the season,” Kaiser said. “It is wonderful to use the event to call attention to an important cause like breast cancer awareness, while also celebrating the game of baseball with live music and the outstanding athletes of the Crofton Athletic Council.”
As fans approach the stadium, they can check out local musician Terry Glaze on the front pad. Glaze is a singer and song-writer who has performed nationally and has previously been the lead singer for national recording artists Pantera and Lord Tracy. As they enter the stadium gates, the first 5,000 fans receive a free Baysox 2011 schedule magnet.
The on-field activity starts with an on-field ceremony with Komen for the Cure. The global breast cancer organization worked with the Baysox to Pack The Park for Pink, with proceeds from tickets purchased online during the month of March being donated to the organization.
At approximately 6:45 p.m. the Baysox will introduce the entire SeaWolves roster. After Erie’s introductions, Bowie will introduce the entire Baysox roster, including the coaching staff.
When the Baysox take the field, they will be greeted by members of the Crofton Athletic Council Cardinals. The older players in the league form a tunnel for the Baysox as each player is introduced. T-ball players and younger Cardinals welcome players from behind home plate and kick off the season by yelling “Play Ball,” after the national anthem. The league joined the Baysox for Opening Night in 2010, with more than 400 players and 60 coaches in attendance.
After the introductions are finished, the Baysox will present a color guard and registered nurse Cathy Greer performs “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Greer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 and underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She has been cancer free since April of 2001.
Opening Night is first game of a seven-game home stand at the stadium. The home stand features Outdoorsman Night Friday, April 15, the F’esta de Italia Beer Dinner and fireworks Saturday, April 16, and the Kid’s Capital Spring Fling, featuring the Spring Egg Hunt Sunday, April 17.
