AACC’s President To Retire

The Campus Current is reporting that Dr. Martha Smith, President of Anne Arundel County Community College will retire next year after 18 years of service to the institution.

Smith made the announcement at last night’s Board of Trustees meeting.

From a press release just issued by the college:

On April 12, 2011, Martha A. Smith, Ph.D., president of Anne Arundel Community College (AACC), informed the college’s Board of Trustees that she will be retiring from her position as president effective Aug. 1, 2012.

Dr. Smith said that “until that time I look forward to continuing to be a part of the excellent and important work of our faculty and staff and all of our partners on behalf of our college and our students.”

The Board of Trustees will be determining the next steps for selecting the president who will succeed Dr. Smith and will keep the college community informed and involved.

Dr. Smith, who began her tenure as AACC’s fifth president on Aug. 1, 1994, has made “Students First” the focus of her presidency and, with the strong support of the college’s faculty, staff, students, and Board of Trustees, recently implemented the exciting “Student Success 2020” initiative, which is focused on students’ completion of their educational goals.

Dr. Smith has been recognized by local, state, and national organizations for her leadership, her vision and her commitment to students and the community. She has had significant influence on a variety of national educational issues and has served as a member of many national boards, including the 20-member Board of Directors of the League for Innovation in the Community College. She also has served on the Maryland Education Council and as a Maryland representative on the national Education Commission of the States. Dr. Smith currently serves as a member of the Governor’s Workforce Investment Board and as a member of the Fort Meade Alliance and the board of the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce.

In announcing her plans to retire, Dr. Smith noted that “it continues to be an honor and a privilege of the highest order to serve as president of Anne Arundel Community College. Thank you for your continued outstanding support.”
