This Week In Volunteering

Arundel House of Hope

Arundel House of Hope has a variety of programs addressing needs of the homeless. It is now in the process of opening a free medical clinic at 514 N. Crain Hwy., Suite C, Glen Burnie in spring 2011 to help serve the county’s uninsured population. Volunteer labor and donations of money and materials are needed immediately to realize this goal. A “sweat equity” model is being used and volunteers with the following skills are being sought: Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Painting, Flooring Specialists, and Other Local Contractors. Jug BayWetlands Sanctuary

At the Sanctuary, children and adults collect water samples, clear trails, weigh turtles, guide visitors on nature walks, draw maps, lead canoe trips, make posters, seine for fish, host the Visitor Center on weekends, and more.   • 1:00-4:00 pm, Sat., Mar. 26, and Apr. 16, 2011, Vernal Pool Training Workshop: Volunteers will learn about the Vernal Pool research project and how you can help monitor frogs and salamanders that depend on these temporary habitats. You’ll also have the chance to adopt a pool of your own to monitor over the spring and early summer. Suitable for adults and families with children at least 8 years old.
  • 1:00–3:00 pm, Sun., Apr. 3, Canoe Guide Training: This workshop for adults and older teens with canoeing experience is land-based training for volunteers to lead canoe trips at Jug Bay. It will cover volunteer responsibilities, canoe safety, paddling techniques, canoe routes, marsh ecology, and an overview of Sanctuary policies.
  • 1:00–2:30 pm, Wed., Apr. 6 and Sun., Apr. 17, 2011 Box Turtle Care Training: This training is for volunteers who are interested in helping us care for three turtles that live in our educational enclosure. Box turtle natural history, feeding and enclosure maintenance will be covered. Suitable for individuals and families with children at least 6 yrs. old.

Maryland Stream Waders

Maryland Stream Waders is a volunteer sampling program intended to fill in many of the information gaps that currently exist concerning the quality of Maryland’s streams. The goal is to greatly increase the coverage of medium sized watersheds, thus enabling state and local governments to better assess streams for conducting restoration and planning activities. In order to become part of the program, volunteers agree to participate in a 1-day training session and agree to spend about two more days during the March-April sampling window collecting aquatic invertebrate samples from stream beds for analysis by DNR. Pet Rescue of Maryland

This non-profit, all volunteer organization serving the greater Baltimore area is dedicated to saving the lives of dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies and finding permanent homes for the animals. Volunteers, age 18 and up, are needed to care for animals at the Glen Burnie Petco Adoption Center, for outreach in the community, fundraising, for emergency services such as animal transport and animal care. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

NAMI Maryland depends upon volunteers to keep its organization going strong. There are so many ways you can give your time to help NAMI Maryland. You can help with advocacy, fundraising, training, education, community outreach or administrative assistance in the office.   • 7:30 am, Sat., May 21, 2011, NAMIWALKS for the Mind of America: Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks before and during the Walkathon being held at the Inner Harbor, Baltimore, MD. Parks and People Foundation

Since 1984, Parks & People Foundation has worked to improve the quality of life in Baltimore’s neighborhoods by helping to improve the physical, social and environmental quality of neighborhoods through greening activities and forming networks among communities to sustain natural resources. A variety of environmental projects are accomplished each year that offer volunteer opportunities for both individuals and groups. Patuxent Research and National Wildlife Visitors Center

Each month, there are opportunities for Volunteers to become more personally involved in accomplishing the mission of the refuge and research center by helping with wildlife surveys and a variety of other tasks. To take part in some of these, a signed volunteer agreement MUST be on file in the volunteer coordinator’s office.  For others, there is no such requirement. Some volunteer positions available for 12 – 15 year olds, if accompanied by an adult. Check the website http://patuxent.fws.gov and watch for more information about volunteer opportunities. SPCA of Anne Arundel County

Volunteers, age 18 and up (or 13-17 with parental accompaniment), are needed to walk dogs, socialize cats, provide foster care for “in-need” animals, help with adoption shows, bathe and brush dogs or help with any other available opportunities. Regular volunteers walk dogs, play with cats, provide foster care for “in-need” animals, help with adoption shows, bathe and brush dogs, assist potential adopters, and help with events. Training sessions are held once each month. The SPCA does not offer opportunities to fulfill court-ordered community service. Call 410-268-4388 or E-mail [email protected]. www.aacspca.org.

Wish List of Items needed for the shelter: premium dog, puppy, cat and kitten food; six-foot nylon leashes and adjustable nylon puppy and adult collars; covered cat beds (not foam);grooming brushes, combs, nail trimmers and clippers and more. The shelter is open for donations on Mon., Tues., Fri., Sat. & Sun. from 9 am – 4 pm , and Wed. and Thurs from 9 am – 7 pm. Contact 410-268-4388.

  • 8:00 am–Noon, Sun., May 1, 2010, “Walk for the Animals”: This fundraiser being held at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis features sponsor giveaways, information about animal welfare agencies, vendors with all kinds of products, and a demonstration by the AA County Police K9 Unit. Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County

9 a.m. – Noon, Sat., Apr. 30, 2011, Help Save the Bay Day: Volunteers are needed to help to control storm water runoff by learning how to build a rain-garden, weed and plant garden areas, clean up underbrush, trash and other debris from Lake Waterford Park. Volunteers will meet at the pavilion near the parking lot at 830 Pasadena Rd., Pasadena 21122 at 9 am. Volunteer waivers must be signed, either there or in advance. The waiver form can be emailed and must be co-signed by a parent for volunteers under age 18. Watershed Stewards will be on site to discuss problems facing the Magothy River Watershed and to assign tasks. Participants should

wear work clothes and closed-toe shoes.
