Anne Arundel County Fair

The Fair is an all-volunteer nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization bringing family entertainment, competition and education to people of all ages in Anne Arundel County and surrounding areas. Creating Communities, 2011 Arts Mentorship Academy8:00 am–2:00 pm, Jun. 20 – Jun. 24, 2011

Applications are being accepted for youth, age 8-17, for a week-long arts immersion program at Maryland Hall for the Performing Arts; talented young artists will experience art as a “life tool” by creating, collaborating and communicating with other likeminded youth. This program is facilitated and mentored by some of the best artists and teachers in the area.  Admission is 100% scholarship and is based on financial need and school counselor, partner or art/music teacher referral.  Adult volunteers are also needed who love working with talented kids and can commit three or more days from June 20-June 24. Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Maryland Chapter

The Maryland Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is hosting the following fundraising walks in Baltimore and Anne Arundel County and is seeking volunteers to help with the events as well as participants to raise funds. Join other fund-raising teams for a day of fun, food and entertainment:

Food Link, Inc.

Established in 1991, this non-profit hunger relief organization provides free food and other essentials to people in need in Anne Arundel County and four counties on the Eastern Shore. A bookkeeper is needed for monthly checkbook reconciliation, entry of all financial info into QuickBooks or other bookkeeping database, and preparation of quarterly financial statement for the board; candidate may work at home or office and year-round average of about 2-hours per month is required. Volunteers with trucks or vans are needed to pick up food from donors for delivery to food pantries, shelters, etc. Assist with emergency food pantry and emergency baby pantry items.   • 7–10 pm, Sat., May 7, 2011, Blue Jean Bash Fundraiser: There is an immediate need for volunteers to serve on several committees including the silent auction committee to prepare for this gala fundraiser being held at The Red Barn on Harness Creek. Food Link is celebrating its 20th year at this great waterfront location with barbecue, music, silent auction, and more. Contact [email protected] or 410-897-3941 for more information.

Happy Helpers for the Homeless, Saturdays and Sundays

This nonprofit organization provides food, toiletries, and clothing to the hungry and homeless.  Volunteers, as young as 6, are needed Saturdays (11:30am-2:30pm) and Sundays (1:00-4:00pm) to assist in distributing items and bag lunches in downtown Baltimore and Glen Burnie.  Ongoing donations needed: men’s socks, toiletry items, men’s clothing, blankets, shoes in very good condition, sturdy napkins/paper towels, mustard, juice boxes, fold-over sandwich bags, lunch meat and fresh fruit. Volunteers can meet in Glen Burnie to caravan up to Baltimore. There is also a critical need for cash donations to help pay rent for space used by Happy Helpers.  Contact Bobbi Coffman at 410-766-4973 for more information about volunteering on all projects and events.

  • Bag a Breakfast Project. Put together a bag breakfast for a homeless individual. Include box of cereal, with spoon and cup, poptart, fruit, hot chocolate package with cup and spoon, juice box, and napkin.  Can be done anytime. Just drop off at Happy Helpers.  Events for which additional volunteers may be needed:
  • 9:00 am–5:00 pm, Sat., Apr. 2, 2011, 13th Annual Easter Distribution for Guatemalan & Impoverished Families in Marydel: The event includes a grocery giveaway, an Easter Egg Hunt, Craft Making, and distribution of Easter Baskets.
  • 9:00 am–12:30 pm, Sun., Apr. 3, 2011 Multiple Sclerosis Walk: “Team Happy Helpers” participates in honor of several people at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium.
  • 4:45–7:30 pm, Mon., Apr. 18, 2011, Global Youth Service Day: To celebrate the day for the 17th year, children and parents will be treated to dinner, games, presents, and more at the Glen Burnie Chuck E. Cheese. Each youth volunteer will serve as a buddy to one or two children.

Maryland Environmental Trust

The Maryland Environmental Trust, which preserves open space by working with owners of farm, forest or historic properties, needs office volunteers, age 20 and up, at our Crownsville office to help with administrative support by managing stewardship materials for use by staff and monitoring volunteers. Tasks may include scanning of slides and easement exhibits, organizing easement information, data entry, preparing and mailing correspondence, and maintaining contact with easement landowners. Hours are flexible and training is provided; basic computer skills are required. All volunteers will enjoy meaningful work with a personable, dedicated, and appreciative staff. Multiple Sclerosis Society, Maryland Chapter

Volunteers are needed for coordinating and implementing activities for clients with MS in long term care facilities and at their homes such as: friendly visitors, monthly social meetings, crafts, trips and preparation and distribution of holiday baskets. Current area needs are Baltimore, LaPlata and Solomons, MD.  Support Group Leaders are also needed who can start new groups for men, professional women, gay/lesbians, ethnic parents, etc. with MS in all Maryland counties. Meetings are held monthly. Also, volunteers are needed to help with fundraising events throughout the year (MS Walks, Rides) and to provide office support. Training is provided.   • 9:00 am, Sun., Apr. 3, 2011, 5K Walk: Volunteers are needed prior to and on the day of the event to assist with the organization and management of the MS Walk being held at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. Que Options Inc.

This non-profit organization develops and administers social programs for the underserved population. Services provided include housing support, job training, transition services, and internships & scholarships. Volunteers age 16 and up are needed to design and maintain the organization’s web site. Adult volunteers are also needed for the Tools for Success program to counsel students on career options, help with preparation of college applications, scholarships and fellowships and to help applicants write winning essays for such applications. In addition, a Spanish language instructor is being sought.
