AA County Department. of Recreation and Parks

Recreation and Parks has a variety of volunteer opportunities for youth and adults associated with specific events at county parks as well as programs that are listed on their web site at www.aacounty.org/recparks.   • 7:15-11:00 am, Sat., Mar. 26, 2011, Rec Deeds Challenge 5K Run & Walk, Sat., Mar. 26, 2011: Recreation Deeds for Special Needs is a non-profit friends & family organization established to provide camp scholarships, adaptive equipment, training and volunteer support to people with disabilities. The Recreation Deeds Challenge 5K Run and Fun Walk fundraiser is being held at Ft. Smallwood Park in Pasadena. Volunteer youth are needed on the day of the event to assist with the course as well as to walk with the groups and assist with registration.
  • Counselor in Training (CIT) Program: Youth candidate volunteers able to serve for 4-weeks are being sought for the CIT Program. Those completing 8th grade in Jun. 2011 are eligible to serve at one of the Summer Fun Centers. Those completing 9th grade in Jun. 2011 are eligible for Day Camp Programs. Program application deadline is May 6, 2011. Applications are available online at www.aacounty.org/recparks.
  • Summer Serve Leadership Challenge 2011: The Volunteer Summer Serve Leadership Challenge 2011 (VSSLC) program is a 2-week volunteer program with a total of 4 different sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss various topics ranging from school year volunteer opportunities to conflict resolution strategies and social issues that they may face in today’s society. Successful completion of the program allows for the opportunity to earn community service hours as well as give work experience as you begin to interview for employment, apply for college, and in various other aspects throughout your life. Applications are available online at www.aacounty.org/recparks and must be received by May 13, 2011 for consideration.
  • Adaptive Inclusive Summer Camp Volunteer Positions: Volunteer athletes and caring individuals are needed to work with Special Needs youth in the Adaptive Summer Programs to assist with adaptive sports and general camp activities. Applicants must be age 14 and up and willing to volunteer for at least one week. A background check is required for those over age 18. Spring Programs will start at the end of March 2011. Friends of Hancock’s Resolution

The Friends volunteer group operates and preserves this historic farmstead in Pasadena, which dates to 1785, and had an important role in the War of 1812. Volunteers, 18 and older, are needed to give tours of the house and gardens to visitors from 1 to 4 pm on Sundays from April through October. Training is provided. Volunteer gardening assistants are needed and days/times are flexible. Other volunteer projects include assisting with historical research, archeology, public education and fundraising. Annapolis Language Bank

Volunteers with a second language capability extend a warm welcome to area visitors who might have difficulty communicating in English. Volunteers also are called upon by Public Safety officials, health organizations, hospitals, the Red Cross, State, County and the City of Annapolis, and other organizations. Volunteers are listed in the Language Bank by language in alphabetical order. Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden & Shop

Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of gardening tasks including planting, watering, weeding, and mulching.  Tour guides are needed, particularly in April & May, to assist the teacher/naturalist with large groups; year round programs need chaperons for field trips as well as assistants for nature programs. Shopkeepers are needed for 2-hour shifts on a weekly or twice-monthly basis at the garden’s gift shop at MD Department of Natural Resources, Tawes Building, Rowe Blvd. and Taylor Ave. in Annapolis. Hours are flexible, training is provided, and volunteers are treated to an awards ceremony. Contact Jay Myers at 410-260-8184 or [email protected].

National Race to Stop the Silence, Sat., April 23, 2011

Stop the Silence, Inc. is a non-profit organization working with individuals, companies, and community- and faith-based organizations in various states to raise awareness and funds to support child sexual abuse prevention and treatment. A variety of volunteers of all ages are needed prior to and on race day, 9:00 am, Sat., Apr. 23, 2011, to prepare for and manage the 7th Annual National Race to Stop the Silence (8K Race, 5K Fun Run/Walk, Kids’ Fun Run) in Washington, DC. Help is needed before the race with mailings, packet pick up, and goodie bag preparation. Patapsco Valley State Park

The Patapsco Valley State Park is seeking volunteers for a variety of positions including bike and mounted patrols, maintenance & management of camp sites, trails, the nature center, and more.   • 9 am– 1 pm, Saturdays, Mar. 5 & 19, Apr. 16 & 30, May 7 (1-4 pm), May 21, and Jun. 4, 2011, Volunteer Trail Work Days: To participate you must sign-up in advance for a particular date. The minimum age to volunteer is 16. The actual location of each trail project will depend on the priorities of the trail crew and the number of volunteers who sign up. Everyone who signs up will be notified by email a day or two before each date and will be advised as to who, where and when to meet and what to bring.

Severna Park Community Center

Volunteer opportunities include working with youth, tutoring in Math or English at the After School Middle School Program, serving on the Board or a standing committee, helping with maintenance work, gardening or coordinating reservations and working with events. YWCA of Annapolis &Anne Arundel County, TWIN Awards, June 2, 2011

6– 9 pm, Thurs., Jun. 2, 2011, Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) Awards Dinner: Nominations are being accepted for women who have made significant contributions to industry in management or executive positions; applications are available for download from the web site at http://annapolisywca.org/twin.php.
