What could have been a major loss of life and property, provided an example of what can happen when automatic sprinklers and smoke detectors are installed and working properly.  At 12:31 p.m., emergency equipment from the City of Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, the United States Naval Academy and Grasonville Fire Departments responded to 701 Glenwood Street, Annapolis, Maryland, for a report of an apartment fire and possibly one person trapped.  Engine-38 arrived on location at 12:35 p.m. with flames reported on the fourth floor.  A second alarm assignment was immediately requested.  The fire was contained to the bedroom of Apartment 418 and was extinguished completely by one automatic sprinkler head.  There was water and smoke damage in that apartment, and several other apartments sustained water damage. Two residents were transported to area hospitals for medical reasons.
