The following release was issued by Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold:
County Executive John R. Leopold today urged citizens to help find new homes for 51 dogs rescued from a house in Pasadena.
“Hoarding is a psychological illness that affects people who think they are helping animals when they are actually endangering their own health as well as the dogs and the community,” County Executive Leopold said. “I am pleased that these homeowners cooperated with Animal Control to save these animals and are trying to seek help with their problem.”
On Friday, March 18, 2011, the County Executive’s office was contacted by an anonymous citizen in reference to a possible animal hoarding in the Green Gables neighborhood of Pasadena.
Officers from Animal Control today confirmed an exceptionally large number of dogs in the residence. The animals in question included poodles, Yorkshire terriers and poodle/yorki mixes. The dogs range in age from newborn to adult. There were a total of 51 dogs recovered from the residence. At this time, Animal Control staff are assessing the health of the dogs and administering requisite shots. None of the animals appear to be in distress at this time.
It is anticipated that most or all of these dogs will be available for adoption starting on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. Animal Control is open to the public for viewing and adoptions Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
At this time the residents have not been charged with any violations. It is anticipated that they will be charged with at least one count of a fancier violation, 4-703, carrying the penalty of a $50 fine. Animal Control has had one prior call to the address. In January of 2006, an anonymous complaint revealed a total of 24 dogs on the property and in the residence. It does not appear as if the residents were charged with any violations for the 2006 incident.
