Annapolis Kids at Hope® Introductory Training, Feb. 25, 2011

Kids at Hope is an innovative concept which states and demonstrates that all children are capable of success, NO EXCEPTIONS! Kids at Hope is not just another program; it is first and foremost a belief system, supported by a cultural strategy and then enhanced by programs.  Kids at Hope empowers organizations to transform their cultures through professional, personal and volunteer development workshops, seminars, institutes and classes.

Introductory Training for educators, parents and others in the community interested in helping children become successful is being held from 8 am– 12 pm, Feb. 25, 2011, at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center, 273 Hilltop Lane, Annapolis, MD 21403. Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services

  • Representative Payee Program: Volunteers are needed for this program that matches volunteers with adults incapable of managing their financial affairs. Volunteers are trained to keep records and handle finances for these adults. The program serves to prevent homelessness and inappropriate institutionalization.   • Office Assistance: Volunteer positions are available in a fun energetic office as a Clerical Assistant in the Office of Special Programs. The Clerical Assistant is part time two-three days a week with a flexible schedule; the duties include computer record keeping, correspondences, and organizational projects. Anne Arundel County Literacy Council

The Literacy Council is the local affiliate of Laubach Literacy Action, recently reorganized as ProLiteracy Worldwide. Literacy tutors are needed for combating adult illiteracy; after completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers, in small groups, and ESL tutoring. Anne Arundel Medical Center

Anne Arundel Medical Center, 2001 Medical Parkway, Annapolis, needs volunteers age 18 and over to work a wide variety of services in the hospital.   Volunteers work in the Emergency Department, Gift shop, Reception Desks, Clothes Box (consignment store) and many other areas.  Although most of the volunteer positions are during the daytime hours, there are some positions for early evening and weekends. Banneker-Douglass Museum

The Banneker-Douglass Museum is in need for volunteers to expand its enlightening and interactive education programs, give guided tours to the general public, students, educators, and others, and assist with front desk maintenance. Feed 40 Thousand Event, Sunday Feb. 27, 2011

The Revolution Annapolis congregation in partnership with Stop Hunger Now (see: stophungernow.org) and Wiley H. Bates Middle School is conducting an Annapolis community-wide event whose goal is to provide 40,000 meals for hungry people. Volunteers of all ages are needed to help pack food from 10 am–Noon on Sun., Feb. 27, 2011 at Bates Middle School, 701 Chase St., Annapolis, MD 21401. Monetary donations are also being sought and groups are welcome. Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake

Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake (HFHC) is a nonprofit which provides simple, decent, affordable houses for deserving families who currently live in substandard conditions in Anne Arundel County and the Baltimore area. Volunteers are needed to help with construction in the county and Baltimore area. Many support volunteer opportunities also exist in providing lunches and serving long-term on committees involved. For Volunteers interested in learning additional construction skills, and are willing to commit to regular volunteer days may want to consider becoming a “Red Hat” volunteer build site construction leader.   • 5:00pm – 7:00pm, Wed., April 20, 2011, Open House: Join us for an Open House! Tour our Chesapeake Office and workshop, learn about current and future worksites, talk with our volunteers, homeowners and staff, and discover how you can help us build homes and revitalize neighborhoods. Historic Annapolis Foundation

Volunteers are needed in the areas of museum tours and education, horticulture in the William Paca House gardens, public programs and special events, membership services, and marketing.  William Paca House docents present tours on weekdays and weekends. Historic Annapolis Foundation also needs volunteers for its new living history site, The Hogshead at 43 Pinkney Street. Come and learn about another aspect of Colonial life as people ventured into the wilderness. Volunteers will be trained to interpret for visitors what life was like during time of the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. Learn about the fur trade, leather crafts, colonial weapons, colonial games and much more, then share that knowledge with guests. Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC)

This Nonprofit agency provides job training and placement services to low income unemployed and underemployed residents of Anne Arundel County.  A wide variety of volunteers are needed to assist with basic computer, GED, English as a Second Language, resume writing, math skills, writing skills, job skills, job interviewing classes, office tasks, receptionist, and more.
