Jing Ying Institute Of Kung Fu & Tai Chi Celebrates The Chinese New Year

Jing Ying Institute of Kung Fu & Tai Chi (www.jingying.org), based in Arnold, will be holding their annual celebration of the Chinese New Year through February 17, 2011 with the following free and low-cost events open to the public. Thursday, February 10 (6:30-8:00pm) Tea Tasting, presented by certified tea specialist, Lynayn Mielke of  East-West Tea Emporium. You will have the opportunity to taste several premium, whole-leaf Chinese teas. Examine the leaf styles, learn about steeping times, get information about the health benefits of various teas, and get the opportunity to get answers to your questions about tea. Friday, February 11 (noon-1:00pm) FREE Traditions of the Chinese New Year Workshop for Children, presented by Wendy Ng. Children and their parents learn more about Chinese culture with information about Lunar New Year Traditions. You get to sample some traditional treats and even try your hand at Lion Dance. Friday, February 11 (5:30-7:00pm) Chinese Calligraphy Workshop, taught by Wendy Ng. Learn basic brush strokes and characters from Chinese Calligraphy. Tuesday, February 15 (7:00-8:30pm) FREE Women’s Self-Defense Workshop – Geared for teens and adults, you will learn basic skills for avoiding trouble and protecting yourself. The workshop will start with a discussion on safety to help you avoid trouble. It will be followed with a lesson on escape techniques for situations you are unable to avoid. Finally, self-defense techniques will be covered for fighting back when you aren’t able to escape easily. Moms, bring your daughters with you for this important workshop. Wednesday, February 16 (4:00-5:00pm) –  FREE Kids’ Kung Fu and Chinese Lion Dance Class – Suitable for children from ages 5 to 10, this workshop will include an introductory lesson in Kung Fu, will provide information on Chinese New Year, and  will teach some of the basics of Chinese Lion Dance.  A child-size lion head is available for the kids to use along with drums, cymbals and a gong.
