The Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre will present a pre-audition workshop for their upcoming production of the musical “Hairspray” on Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 1:30 to 3:00 pm. The event will be held at West Annapolis Elementary School, and there is no charge to participate.
Leading the workshop are the show’s director, Darnell Morris, and choreographer Nicole Martin. It will include an inside look at the history that informs the show’s plot, which is set in Baltimore in 1962 and centers around the integration of a local TV dance program called “The Corny Collins Show” (based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show). Participants will also learn choreography to songs from the show, including “Run and Tell That” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” and will be coached on audition techniques to help them stand out from the rest, nail a song, or execute choreography in a dance call.
“Hairspray” is a Broadway musical based on the 1988 New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters. It won eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It will be performed at ASGT from August 4-September 4, 2011.
