Yet another twist in the convoluted Market House saga has presented itself.
The latest brouhaha was on the $150,000 sliding bi-fold doors that Lehr Jackson wanted for his vision of the Market House. But that kerfuffle was halted today when the County told the City it was a no go. They would not allow the open space if there was food preparation due to the threat of vermin and insects. Two alternatives were presented and according to David Jarell, Director of Public Works, both were rejected by Lehr Jackson. The options were to enclose each interior food preparation area or to install operable windows with screens. Absent these two options, the existing windows will remain and $150,000 should come off the price of the renovations bringing it back down to the original $600,000 estimate according to Jarell. It is unknown if Jackson is agreeable to this configuration.
Several people testified this evening to the Economic Matters Committee and as expected, all testimony was against the lease. Former Annapolis resident Paul Foer cited his experience in negotiating commercial leases to advise the city to “take a step back.” Others offered suggestions that would not require a $600,000 investment including utilizing the space for the Harbormaster and the Visitor’s Center. Rock Taews, a War 8 resident suggested to offer it to a local successful businessman and let them make it work.
Another speaker (name not heard) testified that there was another proposal submitted to the City, yet for some reason that proposal have been hidden from the Council.
Alderman Sheila Finlayson assured the small group of citizens that each and every bit of testimony will be taken to heart as the Council comes to a decision.
