Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay

Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, an established Chesapeake Bay conservation non-profit organization that recently relocated to the Eastport neighborhood of Annapolis, needs part-time volunteers to staff their reception desk, answer phones, and provide some general clerical support and occasional program/project support for the headquarters staff. Hours are flexible with the objective of enabling full 9-5 office staffing in conjunction with permanent staff. This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity. Anne Arundel County Public Schools AVID Tutoring Program

The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Tutoring Program supports students in grades 6 through 12 who are in the academic middle. AVID tutors, age 18 and older, will be trained to work with small groups of students during the AVID elective class.  These students have gone through an application process and have been selected to participate in the AVID Program at their respective school. Tutors will help students be successful by assisting them with problem-solving techniques, working collaboratively with other students, and serving as role models.   • 9-11 am, Wed., Feb. 9 and 12–3 pm, Mon., Mar. 7, 2011, AVID Tutor Training: The Feb. session is being given at the Parham Bldg.-Center III (AA County Public Schools Board of Education, 2644 Riva Rd. Annapolis) and the Mar. session is at the Carver Training Ctr. (Room 102, 2671 Carver Center, Gambrills). Contact Jennifer Ballard.
  • Volunteers are also needed to work with high school AVID students who are partnering with Junior Achievement.  JA Worldwide is a partnership between the business community, educators and volunteers– all working together to inspire young people to dream big and reach their potential.  JA’s hands-on, experiential programs teach the key concepts of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy to young people all over the world.  Junior Achievement provides the training, curriculum, and a classroom ready to meet you. Volunteers will need to commit to a 2½ hour training session where they will become familiar with the program and their role. Volunteers will also need to schedule 7–8 dates with the AVID teacher for approximately 45-60 minutes each session in order to conduct the lessons. Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, Inc.

The Arts Council is a non-profit foundation which encourages and invests in the visual arts, performing arts, and historic preservation for the people of Anne Arundel County.   • 7-11pm. Saturday, February 19, 2011, 13th Annual Mardi Gras Gala:  The event is being held at the Loews Annapolis Hotel, Annapolis, MD. Join us in this festive evening as many of our local talents provide a New Orleans experience for our guests.  This year the Gala will begin with a French Quarter reception filled with many New Orleans traditions.  The evening will continue with exquisite creole dining, and end on the dance floor to the sounds of “New Monopoly.” Contact April Nyman at 410-222-7949 or [email protected]. Arundel House of Hope

Arundel House of Hope’s programs encompass a variety of services for individuals experiencing homelessness in Anne Arundel County. These include transitional housing through the Fouse Center, Supportive Housing through the Safe Haven Program, the Resource and Day Center, and the Winter Relief rotating shelter program. General volunteer needs include administrative support, transportation to and from appointments, job counseling and life skills coaches, computer maintenance help, and persons to serve on the board of directors. Additional opportunities vary by location but include facilities maintenance and repair and grounds maintenance. Donations of food and clothing items, cleaning, office and kitchen supplies, paper products, toiletry items, landscaping tools, and more are also needed.   • 2–6 pm, Sun., Feb. 13, 2011 Fifth Annual Bid for Hope Mardis Gras Extravaganza: Plans are underway for next year’s fundraising event be held at La Fontaine Bleue in Glen Burnie. Volunteers are currently being recruited to serve on this year’s event planning committee. Hospice of the Chesapeake

Hospice of the Chesapeake is seeking volunteers with excellent phone skills to join the “Tuck-In Team.”  Volunteers will be calling patient caregivers on Thursdays from our Annapolis office and checking to see if they have enough medications and supplies to last through the weekend.  Morning and afternoon shifts are available and training is provided.  For more information, please contact Kathy Bourgard, Director of Volunteers, at 443-837-1549 or email to [email protected].

Mt. Olive Community Life Center

This is a program designed to mentor youth within the Greater Parole community to help improve their academic achievement while fostering a positive attitude toward learning.  Mature student volunteers, ages 18 and older, are needed to teach basic skills in math, algebra, geometry, basic computer skills, homework assistance, reading, etc. In addition, volunteers are needed to provide office assistance during the day, and help with building and grounds maintenance. Save the Coconuts

“Save The Coconuts” is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising awareness and funds to fight breast cancer in the Annapolis and Anne Arundel Co. areas.   • 7–11pm, Friday, March 11, 2011, 1st Annual Coco Blanca – This Festively Fun Ball to benefit Annapolis Breast Cancer Organizations is being held at Lowes Annapolis Hotel, Annapolis, MD. The Coconuts are shaking it up this year for our yearly fundraising ball. The Coconut Ball has gone Coco Blanca, moving indoors and back on the calendar, into March. Come on out for a great time. Live music, great food and an open bar are all included in the price of this year’s ticket. Proceeds raised will benefit local, Annapolis Breast Cancer organizations. Solid Rock Community Development Corporation

This non-profit organization partners with organizations to create a stronger network of resources to individuals of all ages, backgrounds and circumstances: academically, financially, professionally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. St. Mary’s Catholic Church English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

St Mary’s ESL Program needs volunteer teachers to teach English one night a week to ESL students for the Sept–Dec. school year, Tues., Wed., and Thurs. evenings, 7:00-8:45 p.m., at St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis. Teaching experience and Spanish knowledge is a plus but not necessary. For training, volunteers are encouraged to observe classes with an experienced teacher until they feel ready to be assigned a class.
