Bates (Wiley H.) Senior Residence (Community Preservation & Development Corp.–CPDC)

This senior residence is operated in Annapolis by CPDC, a nonprofit organization that creates and preserves financially sound, socially responsible affordable housing for low and moderate income individuals and families.   We encourage you to volunteer with us in making an economic and social difference in our communities. CPDC is always looking for energetic and innovative volunteers including youth interns, retired professionals, stay-at-home caregivers, and clerical, technological, and organizational skilled individuals. Battle of the Bands– January 29, 2011

The Thirteenth Annual Battle of Anne Arundel County’s high school rock bands will be held starting at 5:00 pm, Sat., January 29, 2011 at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis. The bands are chosen by the Band Directors of each high school by the December preceding the event. This project helps find more activities for the area’s teens and identifies the musicians who participate in more contemporary music. The proceeds of this usually sold-out event go to the music departments of the winning schools. Volunteers are needed now to head up Security, Advertising and Sponsorship sales. Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G) Project

Thousands of books gather dust in storage rooms and attics, while thousands of students and adults in developing countries lack both textbooks and recreational reading. Volunteers drop off good used books and/or help sort 8:00 am–12:00 noon on the second and fourth Saturdays each month (volunteers should call to verify) at the B.I.G. warehouse at 2000 Capital Dr., Annapolis. Individuals of  high school age and older, are welcome to help on a “drop-in” basis. Select volunteers are welcomed Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to sort and shelve books for future Book Sales. Please contact Joyce at 703-919-0069 if you are interested in helping get books ready for a B.I.G. Sale. There is also a book drop off at this location open 24 hrs. daily; directions are listed on the website, below. Special times may be arranged for groups. Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Maryland Chapter

4:30-9:30pm, Thurs., January 25, 2011, “Annapolis Finest: 40 Under 40”: Volunteers are needed for an evening reception in Annapolis benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at which honorees will be recognized for their fundraising efforts in the fight against cystic fibrosis.  Forty selected men and women under the age of 40 will be given the opportunity to highlight their achievements in community involvement and the local business world while raising funds for CF research. We are looking for volunteers to fill time slots from 4:30–9:30pm, so if you’re in the Annapolis area, available, and interested in helping out, we’d greatly appreciate your time. General tasks would include greeting customers as they arrive, helping with the silent and live auctions, helping with raffle ticket sales, and wrapping up the event. Contact: Lindsay C. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration

7:30–10 am, Mon., Jan. 17, 2011, 30th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast: The event being held at Anne Arundel Community College will feature community leaders, including keynote speaker Julieanna L. Oldies But Goodies Cocker Spaniel Rescue

This nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC rescues, provides medical care, rehabilitation and placement by adoption of homeless and/or abandoned cocker spaniels and cocker spaniel mixes to good homes in the Mid-Atlantic region. Volunteers are needed to provide foster homes until adoption, provide transport of animals, help with fundraising, and to attend adoption shows at PetSmart locations three weekends per month. Operation Welcome Home (MD)

This nonprofit organization provides a hero’s welcome every week at BWI Airport to military personnel returning home from the War on Terror. Volunteers are needed to attend welcome home events to greet by cheering, clapping, shaking hands to say thanks. Groups such as community organizations, schools, scouts, church groups are also welcome to host an event, and/or contribute water and snacks for the troops. Volunteer team leaders, two for each event, also are needed to arrive an hour early to stage supplies and to make an announcement when the event begins. Training for team leaders is required along with a commitment to two events per month. Pets on Wheels/Life Enrichment Program/Mom & Me

Volunteers for all these programs visit one-on-one or with their pets or children at homeless shelters, nursing

homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, adult day-care centers or other sites where people lack visits from

family and friends. Volunteers are asked to share at least one hour each week at the facility of your choice. With more than 76 facilities to choose from throughout the county, there are many opportunities to brighten someone’s day close to your home. PKD Foundation, Baltimore Chapter

The mission of the PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) Foundation, Baltimore Chapter is to assist, on a regional and local basis, the national efforts to promote research to find a cure for PKD and to improve the care and treatment of those it affects. A new Volunteer Chapter Coordinator (age 19 and up) is needed to motivate and lead others in fundraising, lobbying, educating the public, organizing events and helping people affected by PKD. The Chapter Coordinator would ideally have skills in leadership, organization, motivation and fund raising and be available to stay in the job at least two years. STARS – Speakers, Tutors, Achievement, Retention, Success

STARS is an initiative located at the Woodland Job Corps Center in Laurel, Maryland.  STARS works with students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to help with achieving academic goals and the necessary life skills to be a success.  Adult male and female volunteers are needed as mentors and/or tutors to work students between the ages of 16 and 24.  Tutors are needed in math and reading to help them prepare for GED and college entrance tests.  Tutoring is offered on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3:45 to 5:15.  Tutors may work one or both days each week.
