More local families than ever before are coming to the Light House for Homeless Prevention Programs such as Bagged Lunches, BGE Assistance and Pantry Bags. 
As a result, there is an urgent need for:
- Grocery items for the pantry – The pantry supplies well over 200 local families in need each month with two bags of groceries. Right now, the shelves are pretty bare
- Bagged Lunches – Monday through Friday of each week Light House provides Bagged Lunches for those in the community in need of assistance.
- Casseroles – With the additional Winter Relief guests, Light House is in need of frozen breakfast and dinner casseroles to ensure that there is enough food to feed everyone.

In addition to the Homeless Prevention Programs, Light House is stepping in to help our community meet the critical need for severe weather shelter. There are currently more than 65 residents in our shelter and five families in the transitional apartments, compared to the 20-30 homeless served this time last year. Light House is committed to providing safe secure shelter for up to thirty five (35) additional homeless individuals in severe weather as soon as adequate volunteer support is available.
The Light House is seeking additional volunteers to enable the shelter to expand the number of homeless individuals served during severe weather. Volunteers are needed in the following capacities during the stated hours:
7:00 – 11:00p.m Volunteers will prepare food and then distribute it in the “Day Center” space. They will assist with check-in and bed setup, securing guest belongings, organizing showers and other activities. They will help with the close down for lights out and getting guests settled in.
6:00 – 9:00 a.m. Volunteers will help with wake up, breakfast prep and distribution of bag lunches when available, organizing showers, helping guests collect and organize their belongings and check out. Cleanup and laundry takes place from 8:00 a.m. until complete.
8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. Overnight volunteers are present to tend to guest needs during the overnight hours and to monitor behavior and address issues. This shift may be split or shared but 2-3 individuals must be on site at all times to maintain safety and order amongst the guests.
Additional ad hoc volunteers are also needed to pick up and deliver food and laundry as well as to maintain the linens and other supplies and equipment at various times.
Food donations are also needed. Evening meals are best served by donation of casseroles or stews; simple hot and hearty with some nutritional balance. Please bring refrigerated meals in covered disposable aluminum pans. Please date the pans and list contents with an indelible marker such as a sharpie. Milk, cereal, coffee, eggs and hot cereal are all welcome. Please call about donating other needed items.
