Sex Offender Laws Working? No One Knows. Maryland’s new, tougher sex offender laws have been on the books for months, but no one knows if they have made the community safer.At a legislative briefing Tuesday, it was determined that no one has done a study to determine how effective the laws are. Legislators also learned that despite their best efforts, the state is still not in compliance with federal law, which could be costly.

Respiratory Problems Prompt Train Stop In Anne Arundel. Anne Arundel County fire officials said a CSX train carrying hazardous materials was stopped after leaving Washington when construction workers performing maintenance work on a rail bridge suffered respiratory problems. Anne Arundel County fire spokesman Michael Cox said the train was stopped at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in a nonresidential area of Jessup.Hazardous materials team responded to the scene, but there did not appear to be an active leak, he said.Cox said the 98-car train included 14 with hazardous materials, of which four were full and the remaining 10 had residual amounts. Cox said the three workers refused medical treatment.

Mysterious Poe Visitor Doesn’t Show Again. The mysterious visitor to Edgar Allan Poe’s grave has failed to show up for the second year in a row.Fans of the writer waited all night at the Baltimore cemetery where Poe is buried, hoping for a glimpse of the anonymous person who always left roses and cognac at Poe’s tombstone.The tradition went on for some 60 years until last year, when the visitor failed to make an appearance.At about 5 a.m. Wednesday, the curator of the Poe museum declared the vigil over. A dozen people who remained entered the cemetery and left roses at Poe’s grave.

FBI: Initial Tests Link 3 Fiery Letters. The FBI said initial forensic tests have linked the three fiery packages sent to federal and Maryland government officials. Richard McFeely, special agent in charge of the Baltimore field office, said Tuesday that while investigators believed they were liked before, they have determined that the letters that smoked and popped when opened were manufactured in the same manner.The packages were sent to Gov. Martin O’Malley, state Transportation Secretary Beverley Swaim-Staley and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
