Prince George’s County: 11 Murders In 11 Days. Prince George’s County Police said a man was shot to death Tuesday in College Park, bringing the county’s homicide total to 11 in as many days.County police said a man was fatally shot in the 8800 block of 38th Avenue near the University of Maryland at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.Campus police sent an e-mail to the university community saying that county police were looking for a suspect wearing a ski mask in connection with the shooting.Executive Rushern Baker said on WTOP-FM’s “Ask the Executive” program on Tuesday that he’s concerned about a spike in homicides in the county in the new year, but that the acting police chief is “on top of it.”

Fiscal Challenges Loom For MD Lawmakers. Maryland’s $1.6 billion shortfall for the next fiscal year is presenting as puzzling a challenge as ever for Gov. Martin O’Malley and lawmakers returning for the Maryland General Assembly’s 90-day session, following four years of hard choices compounded by the recession. O’Malley, who will submit his budget proposal to lawmakers later this month, describes it as the most difficult he has ever had to put together, as lawmakers convene Wednesday for the first day of the session. “It’s a Rubik’s Cube of really painful choices, and however you twirl and adjust that Rubik’s Cube, at the end of the day it’s still a cube of very painful choices,” said O’Malley, a Democrat. “This next budget that I submit is going to be balanced entirely with cuts, and that will be the beginning of the conversation that we’ll have with the members of the General Assembly.”

His Call: Ravens To Let Ed Reed Decide If He Will Play On Saturday. The Baltimore Ravens will let Ed Reed decide when it’s the right time to return to the team from Louisiana, where he’s helping his family deal with the disappearance of his brother.Reed was awarded the game ball by his Ravens teammates after their playoff win Sunday at Kansas City. He made four tackles in the Ravens’ 30-7 win, then left the team for Louisiana following the game.The Ravens play at Pittsburgh on Saturday, and Ravens coach John Harbaugh said there’s no timetable for Reed’s return to the team.”We’ve left that up to Ed,” Harbaugh told reporters. “I know that Ed knows this team inside and out. … So I think it’s going to kind of depend on the circumstances down there, what he feels he needs to do with his family. But we’ll give him a lot of leeway.”

Snow Falls In Maryland; Schools Announce Closures, Delays. The Wednesday morning commute could be dicey after a winter weather system brought snow to Maryland. The system is expected to pound locations further north.A number of school systems announced closures and/or delays for Wednesday. About 1-3 inches of snow fell Tuesday in many locations, while viewers from Fallston reported as much as 4 inches of snow. Meteorologist Sandra Shaw said 4.5 inches fell in Bel Air. About 2 inches fell on Baltimore’s TV Hill, and 3 inches was reported in Westminster. Flurries and light snow began Tuesday afternoon as the system moved in, and heavier snow started to fall in the evening before tapering off by 11 p.m.The State Highway Administration said it had 1,500 pieces of equipment ready to fend off any roadway problems.
