This week Win Win Gymnastics returned home with four national champions and 19 medals from the National Judges Cup in Phoenix, Arizona, where they competed on January 7-8. The team of six Level 7 Junior Olympic gymnasts who represented the state of Maryland at the meet was the youngest group of girls at the competition and secured the state’s first-time ever placement in the 21-year competition’s top 10 teams for their level.

The gymnasts, ranging in age from 9 to 11, were chosen to represent Maryland in early November after competing at the local Judges Cup in Landover, Maryland.  They proudly brought home 4 Gold, 4 Silver, 4 Bronze and 7 medals ranging from fourth through ninth place from Phoenix.

Win Win’s head coach, Mary Thompson, joined the growing gym last spring and says that she could not be more proud of the team’s accomplishment.

“Their hard work has really paid off,” said Thompson.  “I feel honored to work with such dedicated and talented gymnasts, and I’m excited to see where we go from here.”

The six girls join 4 others in rounding out a successful Level 7 team.  Win Win competed in a second session over the weekend and received 32 medals, earning them second place for the event.  The group spends more than 20 hours each week in the gym and will compete in a minimum of 10 meets this season.   They will go up against gyms from around the country later this month in Orlando, Florida.  In the meantime, there is a local meet this coming weekend.

“We celebrated, and now it’s time to get back in the gym to refocus and see where we need to improve,” Thompson said.

The four first place gymnasts are:  All Around – Maggie Musselman (10) of Crownsville, Uneven Bars – Katie “Peanut” Ours (9) of Severna Park,  Balance Beam – Beira Ho (11) of Silver Spring, and Floor Exercise – Brooke Johnson (11) of Severna Park.  Natalie Cross (9) of Edgewater and Jillian Creswell (10) of Davidsonville also placed with strong scores.  As a group, the girls placed seventh out of 21 teams.  Macey Baldwin (10) of Millersville, Anna LeDuc (13) of Annapolis, Hannah Munnelly (10) of Annapolis and Mia Williams (10) of Annapolis competed with their teammates in securing the second place title for Win Win in the weekend’s second meet.

Win Win Gymnastics is located in Odenton, Maryland, a suburb located between Baltimore and Washington, D.C.  It is owned and operated by Chan Wang, a former college scholarship-awarded gymnast, and internationally recognized USA Gymnastics (USAG) coach and judge.  In addition to Thompson and Wang, the team is coached by Jian Wei Dai and Yang Xu Wen.  Win Win is less than 3 years old and has grown to house more than 40 competitive gymnasts.  In addition to the USAG and Mason Dixon gymnastics programs, the gym also provides coaching for cheerleaders.
